A fly-in safari is perfect for visitors to Kenya who have limited time to spare, or would simply like to add on a few nights to an existing trip. Conveniently these trips depart twice dayly from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport and include return flights, all transfers, meals, an English speaking driver-guide and 4×4 vehicles (apart from Sentrim lodges where game drives are conducted in minibuses) with a guaranteed window seat. For afternoon flight departures, itineraries will end with a morning game drive. Dates for any of these fly-in safaris can be tailored to suit your holiday itinerary (depending on availability obviously).

There are 2 reserves that you can choose to visit on these fly-in safaris from Nairobi.

1) Masai Mara

Masai Mara is one of Africa’s grandest wilderness areas and simply cannot be left out of a safari in Kenya. You will always see a wide variety of wildlife here, though the Big-5 and the migration are what most visitors come for. It is one of the best plains’ game reserves where you can actually encounter a live Discovery Channel experience, a haven for viewing a congregation of all sorts of animals in a five-mile radius.

The wildlife is abundant and the gentle rolling grasslands ensure that animals are never out of sight. The climate is gentle, rarely too hot and well-spread rainfall year round. Rainfalls generally occur during the late afternoon or night. Between July and October, when the great wildebeest migration is in the Masai Mara National Reserve, the sensation is unparalleled. Although there is much resident wildlife year round.

The Masai Mara National Reserve lies about 270 kilometers from Nairobi, and takes about 4 to 5 hours by road. There are scheduled flights, twice daily from Wilson Airport Nairobi, which take about 40 – 45 minutes, hence the added bonus of these fly-in safaris.

2) Amboseli

Amboseli sunset

With the snowy peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro as a backdrop, Amboseli makes the perfect location for a short fly-in safari. Here one can always expect to see herds of elephant, Cape buffalo, giraffe, many varieties of plains game as well as a few predators.

The reserve lies some 240 kilometers south-east of Nairobi very close to the Tanzania border and it covers only 392 square kilometers. But despite its small size and its fragile ecosystem it supports a wide range of mammals, well over 50 of the larger species, and birds with over 400 species. A part of Amboseli is composed of a dried-up lake-bed that in the shimmering heat produces mirages. Swamps and springs, fed by underground rivers from Mount Kilimanjaro’s melting snows, form permanent watering places for the wildlife through times of drought.

There are estimated to be around 650 elephants, the largest number in all of Kenyan parks and reserves per square kilometer. The swamps and springs have encouraged the hippos to stay, and other animals include wildebeest, antelopes, zebras, giraffes, gerenuks, gazelles, and buffalos to name a few.

Your typical fly-in safari itinerary will be as follows:

DAY 1 Nairobi – Masai Mara / Amboseli

Guests will be collected early from Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (or a city hotel) and transferred to Wilson Airport for the scheduled flight to the Masai Mara / Amboseli. Flight departs Nairobi at 10:00hrs (08:15 for Amboseli) and arrives at approximately 11:00hrs into Masai Mara (08:55 for Amboseli). Upon arrival, you will be met by a guide from camp/lodge and drive to the camp/lodge. Following lunch, there will be an afternoon game drive returning to camp as the sun sets. If you arrive in the afternoon, you will be transferred to the camp or lodge. Overnight at your Masai Mara / Amboseli camp/lodge on a full board basis.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

DAY 2 Masai Mara / Amboseli

Rising at dawn with tea and coffee, then a game drive before breakfast, catching the animals before the heat of the day sets in. Rest of the morning at leisure, and then further game drives in the afternoon before returning to the camp as the sun sets.
Overnight at your Masai Mara / Amboseli camp/lodge on a full board basis.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 3 Masai Mara / Amboseli – Nairobi

Following an early morning game drive and breakfast, there will be a transfer back to the airstrip for the scheduled flight to Nairobi. Flight departs Mara at 11:00hrs (09:05 for Amboseli) and arrives into Nairobi at 12:15hrs (09:50 for Amboseli). Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to your Nairobi hotel where the safari ends. For those who arrive after lunch on Day 1, there will be morning activities on the last day before returning to Nairobi late afternoon.

Meals: Breakfast

There are a huge variety of camps and lodges in both the Masai Mara and Amboseli catering for different needs and budgets.

Prices are seasonal, but you can get a 3 day fly-in safari package for as little as US$ 745 per person sharing in low season (01 April to 31 May) for one of the cheaper camps, up to US$ 2570 per person sharing for a more exclusive and luxurious camp in high season (29 June to 31 October).

Kruger National Park is one of the largest game reserves in Africa, and the biggest in South Africa. It covers 18,989 square kilometres (7,332 sq mi) and extends 360 kilometres (220 mi) from north to south and 65 kilometres (40 mi) from east to west.

The park’s history goes a long way back. Rock paintings give evidence that the reserve was stomping ground for nomadic hunter gatherers, known as the San. Their paintings have been found at more than 170 places in the park and dates thousands of years back.

Thulamela in the north (close to Pafuri) is one of the archeological sites dating back to the Iron Age. Tribes from further up north in Africa came down south, and later started trading with sailors from the Far East (that landed at Mozambique) and traded items like ivory, hides, gold and copper.

The park is part of the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere, an area designated by the United Nations Education and Scientific Organisation (UNESCO) as an International Man and Biosphere Reserve (the “Biosphere”). It is also this area that most safaris running from Kruger will visit; the Panorama route.

The park is the site of the popular eyewitness viral video Battle at Kruger.

I want to share some feedback I received from one of our recent traveller to Kruger on the 4 Day Kruger Camping Overland Safari:

” Our Africa trip was amazing, marvelous, hectic (a new word that I’ve learned in Africa =) )

The Kruger tour was also amazing. Bruce and Amen take care of us very well. We were able to see the Big5 in 3.5 days which is the luck of us =). Also we had the opportunity of taking extra game drives which were very entertaining. I’m very happy to choose the camping option instead of accommodation, because everybody was camping and we had fun =)

After this trip we decided to come back to Africa and take a longer tour (Maybe Cape to Vic. Falls). Someday I really need to return to Africa…

I have lots of photos but I haven’t organized them yet. But I’ll send you some photos of the tour as soon as possible =)
If you have the chance to see Amen and Bruce please send my best wishes to them.

Regards,
Ayda ”

The climate of the Kruger National Park and Lowveld is subtropical. Summer days are humid and hot with temperatures often soaring to above 38 °C (100 °F). The rainy season is from September until May. The dry winter season is the ideal time to visit this region for various reasons. There is less chance of contracting malaria and the days are milder. Viewing wildlife is more rewarding as the vegetation is more sparse and animals are drawn to the waterholes to drink every morning and evening.

They give a variety of experiences from wildlife, cultures to scenery. The route has is a bit of everything.

Widlife:

If you are looking for wildlife then there are a number of opportunities to see great game on the Cape Town to Vic Falls overland. Generally the most visited reserves for wildlife are Etosha National Park, Namibia; Okavango Delta, Botswana and Chobe National Park, Botswana. There are numerous parts that you will drive along where you will see other animals.

Scenery:

You are going to see a wide diversity with too much to mention. My top scenery sites have to be the Fish River Canyon (http://www.africanoverlandtours.com/african-overland-destination/southern-africa/namibia.php#fishrivercanyon) just over the South Africa and Namibia border. It is the 2nd largest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon in the USA. It is an amazing place to sit and what the sunset.

Other top areas for me have to be the Sousesvlei dunes. They are huge…AMAZING. Climbing them is a rush and a definite must. Etosha in the north has a lot of diversity from hardy bushes in the south to parse vegetation further north. This is just a few great scenic spots in Namibia but there is just so much more like the Skeleton Coast and the mountains around Spitzkoppe (great for rock climbing).

Botswana has some great scenery with the most visited areas of Okavango and Chobe offering diversity from the waterways and lush bush of the Delta to the more dry region around Chobe (when there is no rain).

You will see some much from mountains, to wetlands, to deserts, just bring enough film or memory on your cameras.

Adventure activities along the Cape Town To Vic Falls route:

Their are tons on offer so budget for them as you will end up doing loads on your Africa overland. For me personally quad biking in the dunes of Namibia brought the biggest smile on my face. I have actually used some of my photo’s of me quad biking as it really is one of my top activities. Other people rave about flying over the Delta (it is expensive but if you can get a few travellers to do it will reduce the per person cost). Vic Falls is by far the mecca for adrenaline sports so brace your self. Loads of people go white river rafting on the Zambezi (http://www.africanoverlandtours.com/adventure-activities.htm#zimbabwe). I have had loads of clients rave about flying over the falls in the micro light. I haven’t done it as I have a bit of a thing about heights but they all rave about it.

Shopping on the Africa overland trip:

Hands down the best value for money has to be in Vic Falls for African crafts. The markets are large and have great gifts on offer. The great thing is also that you can ship your stuff home from there. It is cheap to send.

What to pack on your Africa overland?

For this trip it is dependent on the time of the year. For winter months it can be very cold at night and in the mornings while in summer it will be hot during the days. It is quite simple. Pack for hot and cold and simply bring layers. You can always just add or remove. I would recommend not to wear white clothes as they will get dirty. It is going to be dusty. Bring some comfy trainers or hiking boots as you will be walking in the bush and the shoes will take a beating.

What not to forget about?

Bank cards (there are ATM’s but just don’t use them in Vic Falls).

Malaria tablets (a must from the north of Namibia to Vic Falls)

Visa’s (all though saying that depending on your nationality visa’s can be got at the borders www.projectvisa.com)

Sense of humour as some people might annoy you.

Your adventurous spirit and that you are in Africa (some things don’t run to plan).

Sit back and enjoy the ride!
