Situated in the Ongava Game Reserve to the south of Etosha National Park, in Namibia is the lovely Ongava Tented Camp. Guests are encouraged to unwind in the main area constructed of stone, canvas and thatch, and equipped with a bar and swimming pool. Here, guests have the pleasure of observing the diverse wildlife that wander into the camping area for a drink at the waterhole. Ongava Tented Camp features almost all of the region’s characteristic wildlife, with plain game like springbok, gemsbok, wildebeest, Burchell’s zebra, Hartmann’s mountain zebra, waterbuck, red hartebeest, giraffe, eland and endemic black-faced impala. Etosha itself also has elephants to add to the list. In Etosha, big herds of plains game gather around the waterholes during the dry season, offering travellers thrilling wildlife viewing opportunities. Lion wander between the Park and Reserve, and both endangered black and white rhino can be spotted. Ten of Namibia’s fourteen endemic bird species have been recorded in the 340 species of Ongava.

Ongava Tented Camp is located close to Namibia’s premier wildlife destination, Etosha National Park, allowing guests a range of game viewing activities. Daily outings make for good game viewing, regardless of the season, whilst the exclusive Ongava Game Reserve provides private game drives, along with other exciting experiences. Ongava holds one of the biggest rhino custodianships in the country, and is one of the few private game reserves in southern Africa where travellers have the chance to spot both black and white rhino. Guided walks through the wilderness led by professional rangers allow you to truly appreciate and admire the prolific variety of life here, both big and small.

Ongava Game Reserve was initially established in 1991, when shareholders of Ongava transformed four unproductive cattle ranches into a highly productive 30,000 hectare private game reserve that is now a sanctuary for big populations of wildlife. Most general game has been reintroduced thanks to the Ongava Game Reserve Reintroduction Project, including springbok, gemsbok (oryx), Hartmann’s mountain zebra, red hartebeest, southern giraffe, eland, Damara dik-dik, and the biggest concentration of the endangered and endemic black-faced impala outside of Etosha.

The Ongava Research Centre was founded in 2006, and is integral in the ideal management of the reserve’s ecosystems. The Centre is involved in various excellent conservation efforts, specifically those that are centered on the rare black rhino and the endemic black-faced impala. The numbers of the black-faced impala in Ongava have been stable for a while now, at about 300 bucks. This is the biggest ‘pure’ population outside of Etosha, and is said to represent approximately 10% of the global population of this subspecies.
