The Devils Pool – Victoria Falls
The first time I saw pictures of Devil’s Pool at Victoria Falls, I thought to myself, “Those people must be insane!”, then I read about it and also wanted to go.
And so I did!
Where and when can you visit the Devil’s Pool?
For those of you who have never heard of Devil’s Pool, it is located on the edge of Victoria Falls, between Zambia and Zimbabwe. The concept alone, of a natural pool at the edge of one of the World’s biggest waterfalls is frightening, but living that experience is surreal!
You’ll need to visit Vicoria Falls during the low water period to enjoy this activity and this is usually between September and January. Access to Devil’s Pool is gained from the Zambian side and you can choose a variety of price options, including or excluding meals.
The journey to Devil’s Pool starts at a five star hotel, on the banks of the Zambezi River. After a day spent on the truck and setting up camp, we arrived just in time at the hotel, at 3 PM. After getting used to camping, tents and sandwich meals, arriving at such a luxurious hotel made me feel like a fish out of water.
We hopped on a boat and were ferried to the island in the middle of the river. The trip was short and quick.
A little walk was all that remained until we reached the edge of the waterfall. Throughout the walk, first on land and then on water, all I could think about was “how could I have got myself into this situation?!?”. I had never done something so extreme in my life! When we arrived at the rock where you’re supposed to jump into the “pool” and see the strong current flowing to the edge, we stopped to think twice. It’s an indescribable feeling. On one hand it’s exciting, on the other it makes you feel scared for your life.
If the guide was in the water, so could I be. He even seemed to be staying very still in the water.
I felt my heart skip a beat, and there I was, holding onto a rock, inside Devil’s Pool. The name is very suggestive, really!
The water was cold, and we had been told there were small fish that eat the dead skin off your feet, and so it was that I had a pedicure in an infinity pool at the edge of one of the world’s largest waterfalls. A little scare here and there, only because of the fish! The pool was really safe, so long as we stayed out of the current.
It was one of the best experiences of my life and I really recommend it for those seeking some different thrills! This one truly takes your breath away!
