Lilongwe – Old Town and the New Capital City

Lilongwe is the capital of Malawi. There are two parts to Lilongwe; Old Town and the new Capital City. Old Town has bustling street markets, while the new city is very much like other developed cities with modern buildings and neat, uniformed garden-like areas. In the city there is Old Town Mall which is a great place to find souvenirs. Or you can try African Habitat with locally-made ornaments and furnishings. The Central Africana bookshops and galleries provide interesting information on Malawi – its exploration, development and growth.

Between Old Town and the new city lies the Lilongwe Nature Sanctuary which is home to rescued, orphaned and injured wild animals. Here they encourage the locals to be a part of nature conservation by lending a hand and giving of their time to the animals, thus benefitting both parties.
