Lisbon Falls, South Africa

The magnificent Lisbon Falls can be found just north of a small town called Graskop in Mpumalanga, just outside of the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve. These Falls are the highest in the country and are located in an extremely rich waterfall region. There are more waterfalls situated in this area than in any other part of Southern Africa. Lisbon Falls is 92 metres high and lies within the renowned Panorama Route, where you can pay a visit to some of the finest natural highlights of the area, such as the Pinnacle, God’s Window, Bourke’s Potholes and other waterfalls, including the Mac Mac Falls and Berlin Falls.

The river that forms the Falls divides into three channels before tumbling from a spectacular height onto the rocks below, causing almighty spouts of white spray. The viewing point at the top of the Falls is magnificent, giving the illusion that you are standing behind a massive curtain of flowing water. If you enjoy a physical challenge, embark on a hike down to the bottom of the gorge, where water froths and churns. The route down to the gorge is quite physically demanding and can take up to an hour. However, your destination is well worth the descent, greeting you with refreshment in the form of soft sounds of cascading water as it rushes down into a massive deep green pool.

Situated in a basin of hills, Lisbon Falls is a wonderful area in which to relax after a busy day of sight-seeing in the region. Another lovely thing to do here is to pack a picnic and unwind beneath the shade of the trees in one of the most picturesque picnic sites in the area. Be sure to keep an eye out for some exquisite birdlife, including small colourful sunbirds.
