Maun – Okavango Delta, Botswana
With our bags and supplies packed and ready to go, we climb aboard our 4X4 vehicle armed with sunblock and hats, ready to discover the marvels of the Okavango Delta. This stunning area is a natural wetland system, extending over approximately 1.6 million hectares of northern Botswana, formed by rivers flowing south from Angola and dividing repetitively on the flat Botswana plains to create a complex network of channels and an inland delta (the only one of its kind in the world!) Following a leisurely drive along rough and snaking terrains, we make our way across the ‘Buffalo’ fence that exposes us to the true wilderness of Africa. We locate the water’s edge and meet up with our local expert guides who help us into their mokoros (traditional dugout canoes) and softly ‘pole’ us out onto the calm waterway. Moving smoothly over glimmering ponds whilst snaking through lush, green bulrushes and gorgeous lilies, we set up camp beneath the cool shade and enjoy a tasty lunch.
Our afternoon is spent either game walking with our guide, observing hippo from your Mokoro, or just taking some time to unwind at camp. Our evenings are spent listening to the calming sounds of wild animals in the far-off distance whilst we gather around a warm campfire and cheer for our guides to perform some of the traditional Tswana songs for us all.
