Nairobi – Samburu National Park

We depart from Nairobi today, making our way north past the snow-capped Mount Kenya and wheat and dairy farms before the terrain starts to transform and we enter the semi-desert district of the Northern Frontier. Climbing down the central highlands of Kenya, we travel through Isiolo and finally arrive at the Samburu National Reserve. Our campsite for tonight is situated near the Ewaso Nyiro river, a pleasantly simple camp environment with essential facilities. If the road conditions allow, we reach camp in the late morning and will perhaps have some time for a quick but restful nap during the hot afternoon. Later in the day we embark on our first game drive through the reserve. Spotting your first lion or elephant is a thrilling experience, but be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the rarer species as well, such as the reticulated giraffe, ‘Grevy’s zebra’, the Beisa oryx, the Somali ostrich and the gerenuk, as well as a variety of antelope and bird species. When the sun begins to set, we make our way back to camp where we indulge in a delicious dinner and a good night’s sleep.
