Perhaps more well-known is this outdoor event – Afrikaburn, beating to its own pulse in the heart of the Karoo, Tankwa Karoo. This event encourages you to participate and not just speculate. Each year there is a different, unique and often outlandish theme. Participants are asked to use their heightened imaginations to bring something extraordinary to the event. Make sure you enjoy camping and basic ablutions as there are no hotel rooms for miles! It is a festival for extroverts and eccentrics, characters and party people…
Bushfire, Swaziland
The Bushfire festival promises to set your heart and your feet on fire. The variety of music is totally eclectic. In the past there have been Swazi dancers in full traditional costumes getting their groove on to Spanish hip-hop, rastas chilling out on a field listening to Japanese mbira music, a strange man wearing a coconut-mask playing drums for a Ghanaian-Swiss jazz singer…it just does not get any more eccentric than this. And to top it all off, all profits go to homes where children are the head of the household.
Lake of Stars, Malawi
Indulge in over 42 live music, comedy, poetry and drama acts on two stages. Plus film, art, crafts and food on the shores of Lake Malawi. They also have a Children’s programme with jumping castles, face painting, treasure hunt, games and storytelling with Mickey and Minnie Mouse.
Victoria Falls Carnival, Zimbabwe
Although there are no details about this year’s event yet, last year’s event was as big and as loud as the Falls itself!
