How do I Save for a Holiday?

It’s easy, just stop spending!! Well, we all know that is easier said than done, but it is possible to put money away every month by sacrificing and taking a few short cuts that will help you to save. There are many ways to save, and here are 12 Top Tips on how to do that. Remember you don’t have to do this forever – you can decide how long you want to do it for.

1. Every month, put R100 a month or more away (out of sight!) Do this as soon as you get paid.

2. Find activities to do at home on the weekends. Spending money at restaurants or bars can become very expensive, so get the family involved in making pizzas at home and restrict yourself to luxuries such as alcohol, puddings and cakes. Consider it a detox holiday plan!

3. Pack your own lunches for work and cut down on those cappuccinos throughout the day!

4. Here’s a tough one: STOP SMOKING! If you smoke 20 cigarettes a day at approximately R35 a pack, you are spending over R1000 a month on cigarettes. That’s quite a few optional activities you can partake in on a safari!

5. Save money on petrol by walking, car pooling or not travelling long distances unnecessarily.

6. Sell unused household items, books etc. to second hand stores or online. You will be surprised what you can get for them.

7. Do you have a special skill that you can sell? Are you a good carpenter? Can you make jewellery? Could you paint a room for a friend? Offer baking/cooking classes? Make a gift instead of buying one?
All of these little things can help you save a lot of money.

8. Avoid buying take-aways and finish what is in your fridge/freezer before shopping again.

9. Try to do your own household maintenance, or ask a skilled friend to help you.

10. Start buying gifts early for Christmas before the stores increase the prices for the ‘silly season’. Have an honest chat to your friends and family and decide on a limit on how much you want to spend on each other. Buy a gift for the whole family, instead of each person.

11. Book for your holiday early and receive a discounted rate.

and 12. …if you have any energy left after all of that: try and find a part-time job for weekends and/or evenings.
