Highlights in Botswana

Here are a few highlights in Botswana for your Africa Overland Tour.

Maun: Once a dusty little frontier town where local people brought their cattle to trade, Maun is today Botswana’s tourism capital and the springboard for safaris into the Okavango Delta and Moremi Wildlife Reserve.
Chobe National Park: Covering 11,000 sq km (4300 sq mi), Chobe National Park has the biggest variety of wildlife on a budget african safari compared to anywhere else in Botswana.
Makgadikgadi Pans: No landscape on earth is like this. Once an enormous lake, the Makgadikgadi Pans are now three immense salt pans (the largest on earth).

The Nata Bird Sanctuary is community-run and is a definite highlight of Botswana. Though this haven protects antelope, zebra, jackal, foxes, monkeys and squirrels, the main focus of the project is the massive population of water birds. More than 165 bird species have been recorded here thus far, including kingfishers, carmine and blue-cheeked bee-eaters, martial and black-breasted eagles, and secretary and kori bustards. When the river flows during the rainy season, the sanctuary also becomes a haven for Cape and Hottentot teals, white and pink-backed pelicans, and greater and lesser flamingos.

TOURS TO BOTSWANA

The approach to Moremi Gorge hints at what is ahead. A trail leads into this dizzying canyon, giving visitors a completely new experience. Aside from the pure beauty of the site and its copious birdlife, keep an eye out for small ancestral shrines set in rocky clefts, and the sign-posted boulder that dropped to the floor on the day that the president died in 1980. Near the entrance you will find wonderful accommodation that offers excellent views of the stunning hills below.

Other places to visit are Palapye, Nxai Pan and the Central Kalahari Game Reserve.
