Places to stay in Hermanus

There are so many great places to stay in Hermanus from guest houses, lodges, hotels and B&Bs, but here are a few we have selected.

Schulphoek is located five kilometres from Hermanus on a gorgeous, peaceful bay with exquisite ocean views, making it an ideal whale watching spot in season.  The bedrooms are tasteful and spacious, with a few promoting absolute luxury and a couple offering lovely ocean or garden views. The dining room, with an uninterrupted sea view is staffed with an expert chef who prepares excellent gourmet meals that include sumptuous seafood and venison dishes, freshly picked herbs and vegetables and more than 12,000 bottles of regional wine. Here, guests can indulge in body therapy, unwind by the sparkling pool or take part in a selection of three gold courses. Other activities include hiking, bird watching, fishing, whale watching, treetop canopy tours, quad biking, picnics, kayaking, horse riding, great white shark sightings and wine tastings, to name but a few. Guests of Schulphoek are greeted with a complimentary gourmet dinner upon the night of their arrival, welcoming them to this popular romantic and private getaway.

Grootbos tends to immediately charm guests as they arrive. Situated two hours from Cape Town, in the heart of the Cape Floral Kingdom and overlooking the whale watching paradise of Walker Bay are two impressive lodges (Forest and Garden) that have been constructed in harmony with the natural environment.  Garden Lodge is set in an indigenous garden with spectacular sea views, with each suite nestled amongst age-old trees and providing private sundecks with breathtaking vistas of the surrounds. Forest Lodge is an architectural masterpiece, with 180 degree views and complete privacy in each and every suite. Unwinding in these units is an easy task, with a light-filled lounge, spacious bathroom, large bedroom and big outside patio with incredible views of the ever-changing ocean and African sky. The creative cuisine here is made with home-grown organic vegetables and only the freshest local produce, which is wonderfully complemented by fine local wines. Devoted conservationists accompany guests every day on marvelous outings to explore the plant, animal, bird and marine life of the region on foot, horseback, or in open 4X4 vehicles.

Pelagus House is situated just metres away from the cliff path and ocean, offering guests luxury accommodation in beautiful Hermanus. Sophisticated and peaceful, this is a perfect place for some fantastic whale watching, with magnificent views of the sea and the lulling sounds of waves lapping at the shore. Guests are welcomed with warmth and hospitality, and are offered tasteful rooms that come equipped with a fridge, hairdryer, satellite television, safe and tea tray. Here, you can unwind in the library, snuggle up in the lounge next to the fireplace, or spend time relaxing next to the pool or in the Jacuzzi. From the House it is an easy walk to charming village stores and restaurants, and a simple stroll across the road where you can watch the dolphins and whales at sea. You could also follow the cliff path to the harbor and make your way back to enjoy a fine Cape wine at the pub.

Nautilus Cottage is separate residence to Pelagus House, but is located on the same seafront property in Hermanus. It offers guests luxury accommodation and, combined with the magic of Africa and the close proximity to the sea, relaxation and rejuvenation are naturally inevitable. With thatched rooms, guests can spend their nights in tasteful bedrooms equipped with DSTV, bar fridge, tea tray, safe and heated towel rails. Enjoy tasty breakfasts before heading out on a leisurely stroll along the cliff path to the village and old harbour, or spend time unwinding and tanning next to the sparkling swimming pool.
