The best places to travel to in Africa in June

June marks the beginning of the winter season in southern Africa, and the start of the dry season in many countries, so it’s a fantastic time to travel, whether you are planning on going on a safari or lazing on a tropical beach.

Here’s our round up of the best places to travel to in Africa in June.

South Africa

Kruger National Park is fantastic in June, when the vegetation is sparse due to the lack of rains and daytime temperatures are pleasant (just bring a warm fleece jacket for those early morning game drives). There are also few mosquitoes at this time of year.

During the summer months, the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in northern South Africa has unbearably hot days, which means that unless you’re up for handling the desert heat, winter travel to the park is your best bet. In June the weather is mild during the day and cold at night – bring your winter sleeping bag!

While the Western Cape is chilly with lots of rain, the northern KwaZulu-Natal coast is generally balmy in June, and it’s a great time to visit the province’s lovely beaches to escape the summer crowds. Just be sure not to visit over the South African school holidays, which usually start right at the end of the month.

Namibia’s summers are scorching hot, which makes June – the start of winter – a great time to visit. Nights can be chilly, so if you’re camping bring a warm sleeping bag, but day time temperatures are pleasantly warm. The winter season is also a fantastic time for visiting Etosha National Park, as the water sources dry up, forcing animals to congregate around waterholes, making wildlife incredibly easy to spot.

Uganda

Gorilla tracking Uganda

June is the start of the dry season (which lasts until September) in Uganda, and is one of the best times of year to visit the east African country if you’re thinking of going gorilla tracking. While you can go gorilla tracking during the rainy season, the muddy paths make hiking more difficult – it’s much easier to hike during the dry period.

Zanzibar

The rainy season in Zanzibar ends in May, and June marks the beginning of the dry season, which lasts until October, and is the best time to visit the East African tropical island.

Botswana

June is the start of the dry season in Botswana’s Okavango Delta, when animals migrate to the Delta in search of water, making for excellent wildlife viewing. The temperature is also pleasant, and there also are less mosquitoes at this time of year.

Tanzania

June is a great time to visit Tanzania’s flagship park, the Serengeti, before the wildebeest return to the Masai Mara in Kenya around August. The rainfall at this time of year is low, while daytime temperatures average around 26 degrees. In the Ngorongoro Crater, the rainy season ends in May while the peak season starts in July, making June an ideal time to visit: it’s a low-risk period for malaria, there’s little rain and animals are congregating around rivers and waterholes in search of water.
