Things to do in Uganda

Officially known as the Republic of Uganda, Uganda is a landlocked country located in East Africa. It is bordered in the east by Kenya, in the north by South Sudan, in the west by the DRC (Democratic Republic of the Congo), in the southwest by Rwanda, and in the south by Tanzania. The southern portion of the country encompasses a large section of Lake Victoria, which is also shared between Kenya and Tanzania. Uganda is situated in the Nile basin, and enjoys a varied but generally equatorial climate. It is a lush country and offers many things to do in Uganda.

Check out these exciting Things to do in Uganda:

Bujagali Falls, better described as a sequence of big rapids than a typical waterfall, remains one of the most remarkable natural beauty sites in Uganda. This is one of East Africa’s more relaxed locations and offers guests some time to simply unwind and enjoy the splendour of their surroundings. Many visitors choose to overnight here before or after a rafting trip due to the popular camping grounds here.

Bwindi ‘Impenetrable Forest’, is one of Uganda’s most recently formed national parks. The Park, which stretches over 331 square kilometres, includes one of the last remaining habitats of the mountain gorilla, and is where an approximate 330 (almost half) of the surviving mountain gorillas in the world reside. A huge conservation effort has been made here over the past couple of years in order to guard the habitat of these gorillas. However, these gentle giants are not the only animals that benefitted from this project. The Park houses around twenty forest elephant, about ten primate species (including chimpanzees, colobus monkeys and baboons), duikers, bushbucks and the rare giant forest hog, as well as a wide array of bird and insect species. This is one of Africa’s richest plant and animal areas. Treks to see the gorillas are available, but are very challenging and must be booked in advance.

The Nile’s source is one of the most remarkable white water rafting destinations on earth, and for most Uganda visitors a rafting trip is the absolute highlight of their holiday. There are four companies here that offer exhilarating experiences, all of which take on the Big Four, all massive Grade Five rapids (including Itanda – ‘the Bad Place’), but there is always a safety boat nearby if you change your mind about the trip halfway through. All conductors offer tasty meals and beers, and even DVDs of your adventure on the waters. There are also kayaking courses here that last from 3-5 days, as well as tandem kayaking outings and sunset paddles. Overall, the Nile is a beautiful area and a fantastic place to spend some of your time in Uganda.

The Kasubi Tombs, located just off of Masiro Road, were first constructed in 1881. They are definitely worth a visit simply for the traditional culture experience they provide. The tombs are open throughout the year, including holidays, and can be reached by minibus. The minibuses you’d like to book are the ones at the junction of Hoima and Masiro Roads. The tombs are a couple of hundred metres trek up the hill from here, and are marked by signs. They are maintained by the Ganda clans.
