You see it kilometres away, the plume of white mist (smoke) rising up over the African bush. But it is only when you get closer (without actually still seeing it) that the local name for Victoria Falls comes to full appreciation. Mosi-oa-Tunya – the smoke that thunders!
But it is also known as the adventure capital of Africa, and there are activities to choose from to delight all the senses, especially the sense of adventure! (As if being in Africa is not an adventure enough already.)
My wallet has not allowed me to yet sample all the activities on offer at Victoria Falls, but over the years I have done quite a few of them, and with some input from my trusty (yet slightly insane) colleagues I am going to give you the top 5 things to do at Victoria Falls (according to us as least).
Top Adventure Tours to Victoria Falls:
1) White Water Rafting:
My first taste of the Mighty Zambezi was back in November of 1999, and my, what an experience. I was still young, naïve and full of energy, and did the nyaminyami (Zambezi River God) bring me back to earth, she was brutal on that day. But what a ride, to date it is still the best in my memory after 3 subsequent visits back to the river for a shot of adrenaline.
Low water levels generally makes up for the bumpier ride, and with rapid names like; Devil’s Toilet Bowl, Commercial Suicide, Overland Truck Eater and Oblivion to name just a few that you will encounter on the 24km stretch taking in 18 rapids.
2) Elephant Back Safari:
To soothe your senses and calm you down after the close escape with the Zambezi River Gods; go on an elephant back safari and allow the gentle swaying motion to relax you as you watch the bush go by from up high.
Getting close and personal with these gentle giants is an experience not to be missed. It is truly fascinating to see the different personalities of the elephants, and just how intelligent they are. They have such different senses of humour and self awareness; I came away with a totally new understanding and love for these beasts.
As Aristotle once said: “The beast which passeth all others in wit and mind.”
3) Bungee Jumping:
And then back to more adventure! At least you can appreciate the beautiful backdrop of the falls before flinging yourself off the Victoria Falls Bridge and plunging 111 metres down Batoka Gorge.
Jumps operate from 09:00 to 17:00 every day.
4) Micro-Light Flights:
An angel’s view over the falls! And if you have a loved one to impress; sunset trips are very popular.
5) Walk with Lions:
This is an opportunity to spend time with 3 lion cubs before they become king of the jungle. They generally range between 3 and 16 months, after that it will be just too dangerous as their hunting instincts start to take over.
Your mates will be very impressed with photos of you posing with Africa’s apex predator.
6) Leave your name under the bar counter:
Oh sorry, we did say only 5 tips. So we will leave that one for you to go and experience yourself.
