Shosholoza Meyl: Travel by Train in South Africa

Shosholoza Meyl means ‘pleasant experience’ and started operating in 2001. In 2006, they separated the train into two different types, namely the Tourist class trains and the Economy class trains. The trains run between Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth, Queenstown and East London.

The Tourist class trains’ compartments are suites during the day and then converted into bedrooms at night. There are basins with hot and cold water or you can go to the communal bathrooms for hot showers. The dining cars serve meals, snacks and beverages which can be enjoyed in the compartments or the dining area.

The economy class has sitter class seats and some of them have restaurant cars.
