Tour Reviews

Review by Pia W:

The tour I had booked at African Overland Tours exceeded my expectations – it was great fun with many great experiences. Before, during and after the booking I felt so well informed, consulted and supported by Huntley Cronje (Thanks to you again!) who answered all my (countless) questions with his outstanding friendlyness. Booking, payment, the journey… everything went very smoothly without troubles or anything. You helped me to enjoy a perfect adventure!

Day 1: Windhoek – Gobabis Area – Namibia

Today you will be fetched between 07h30 and 08h00. Leaving Windhoek, we head to the Gobabis Area where we will have our first overnight stay on tour. When we arrive we set up camp. After which, you will meet your San-family host at the craft area. Here you will learn how to make crafts taught by the craft village men and women.

Depending on the weather, you depart on an afternoon bush walk joined by a small clan of Bushmen. You will be taught and shown the hunting skills of the Bushmen, including tracking, stalking, fire making and finding underground water roots.

After the bush walk, you return to the camp to experience the San cultural dances, singing, and traditional games. All whilst watching the sun setting over the Kalahari. After the activities, you will be treated to dinner prepared over an open campfire and spend the rest of the evening stargazing at the camp.

Day 2: Uakii San Camp – Guma/Okavango Delta, Botswana

We awake early today for a swift stopover in Ghanzi to gather any last minute provisions before carrying on east then north, through the dunes of the Kalahari and passing small towns en route. You will notice a transformation in the types of plant life upon our arrival on the western edge of the magnificent Okavango Delta. From here we travel north for a while before heading west as we make our way into the Delta itself where we will see for the first time the dense plant life of the region. We then set up camp on the banks of the beautiful, untouched Guma lagoon.

Distance: 650 kilometres
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation:  Camping

Day 3: Okavango Delta, Botswana

Today we are in the land of the River People, meaning that we will travel through this region by means of boat and mokoro (traditional dug-out canoe) that carry us deep into the heart of the Okavango Delta. Our primary mode of transportation, mokoros, are incredibly crafted for use in the narrow water channels of the Delta and permit us to journey further into the Okavango than if we were to utilise any other form of transport. Mokoros can carry up to three people, with the driver being the third who stands on the edge of the canoe and ‘poles’ us through the snaking waterways. This is the most spectacular way to view this stunning region. Later in the day we head back to camp for yet another evening spent near the Okavango waters.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation:  Camping

Day 4: Okavango Delta – Caprivi, Namibia

We hit the road today and head to our next destination, Namibia. We will need to complete some border formalities, before we set off for the Mahango Game Reserve situated on the Okavango River edge. We game drive through the Park, giving us the opportunity to catch a glimpse of elusive species of Namibia, including the Roan antelope and mighty Sable antelope. We continue driving and travel along the Caprivi Strip which is a long narrow stretch of territory that runs along Botswana’s northern border.

We camp on the water’s edge of the Kwando River.

Distance: 345 kilometres
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Camping

Day 5: Kwando – Chobe National Park, Kasane, Botswana

Known for its community tourism product, Lizauli Traditional Village gives you the opportunity to experience a glimpse of life in a traditional village.  They show you how to stamp a millet, how grained can be stored and the different kind of transport used. Forging of metal tools and knives can be viewed, while the hand-made bellows are a operated by the assistants. Feel free to interact with the traditional healer.

We then reach the easternmost town of Namibia, Katima Mulilo. We will have a brief stopover here before making our way back across the border and into Botswana. The route we travel carries us into the renowned Chobe National Park, which is home to the world’s biggest concentration of African Elephants. Here, our chances of spotting big game are extremely high as we journey through the Park to the tiny town of Kasane. We set up camp at a local lodge situated on the Chobe Riverbanks.

Distance: 230 kilometres
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation:  Camping

Day 6: Chobe National Park, Kasane, Botswana

We awake to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee before embarking on a slow game drive through the Park on which we explore the marvels of the Chobe National Park. Game drives inside the Park give us the chance to observe massive elephant herds and other big game up close. There is also the chance to have a close-up encounter with large African predators here. We then unwind over lunch at camp before embarking on a river boat cruise that carries us back into the Park. From the boat we will be treated to magnificent views of abundant wildlife that wander along the riverbanks and swim in the sparkling waters on which we glide.

Crocodiles and hippos are plentiful in the Chobe River and on the riverbanks you can usually spot a large variety of antelope and game such as elephant, buffalo and Big Cats who have come down to the river for an evening drink. The Chobe River offers a wide range of habitats for birdlife, providing amazing opportunities to spot some of these magnificent creatures.

Day 7: Kasane – Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Our journey today takes us to the Kazangula border, this is the near meeting point of four countries (Namibia, Botswana, Zambia & Zimbabwe). Upon completion of border formalities we make the short drive to the town of Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

Victoria Falls presents a spectacular sight of awe-inspiring beauty and grandeur on the Zambezi River, forming the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. It was described by the Kololo tribe living in the area in the 1800’s as ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ – ‘The Smoke that Thunders’.

Our campsite is situated right in the middle of Victoria Falls town making it a perfect place to be based with all amenities within walking distance. The Rest Camp is only 2km’s from the falls making it the closest campsite to the Victoria Falls. Here you have the optional activities such as white water rafting, bungy jumping, scenic flights and many other fun adventures.
