Our 17 Day Best of Namibia safari (Inclusive) starts and ends in the capital city of Windhoek and heads south to the Namib Desert, before following an "off the beaten track" route to the desolate Skeleton Coast, Twyfelfontein, Palmwag , complimented with a few days game viewing in the wildlife rich Etosha National Park. This accommodated tour provides bedding for all the nights. Accommodation may vary from tour depending on availability, similar standard properties will be provided. The tour requires participation from all group members. This entails assisting with the food preparation, washing of dishes and keeping the truck clean. Please keep in mind that flexibility and an open mind is needed on the trip.  The guide is registered with the Field Guide Association of Southern Africa (FGASA). The tour has been designed to include all highlights in the price and thus avoid any hidden surprises. On the accommodated trip all equipment is provided including linen including towels.

Day 1: Windhoek, Namibia

A short tour briefing will be conducted at 14h00 at the hotel before we set off for Windhoek on a tour of this bustling city. We will visit the local museum before enjoying a drink or two at Joe’s Beerhouse or a similar restaurant where we will continue our tour briefing and enjoy warm hospitality and an own expense dinner.

Day 2: Windhoek – Kgalagadi, Botswana

We leave the city life behind us and head for the wide open plains of the vast Kalahari Desert. We journey through remote farming towns where we will have time to mingle with the locals. We will arrive at our accommodation in the Kgalagadi in the late afternoon.

Day 3: Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, Botswana

After a hearty breakfast, we head off on our game drive through the Kgalagadi Trans frontier Park. This Park spans both South Africa and Botswana. There is a large population of predators here and perhaps you will have the chance to see some of these animals in action. For those of you who have a knowledge of African birdlife, there will be plenty of opportunities to test your knowledge. After a long day of driving you can rest your weary heads at a the accommodation in the park that is situated amongst the Camel Thorn trees.

Day 4: Kgalagadi – Fish River Canyon, Namibia

An early morning rise will allow us to see the incredible sunrise over the red dunes. We will pack up camp (your help here is always greatly appreciated) and set off on a scenic route across the Kalahari driving over numerous high dunes. We are heading to Keetmanshoop, then Fish River Canyon – the second largest canyon in the world. We will spend some time here before another highlight of the day – the hot springs in Ais-Ais located in the depths of the canyon. We will rest at the hot springs for the night.

Day 5: Fish River Canyon – Aus, Namibia

In the morning we will take a quick walk around the canyon before taking a trip on the remote roads to the southernmost point of our journey – the gushing Orange River. This area forms the border with South Africa and has a narrow band of green vegetation that gives life to the animals that frequent this area. We stop here for lunch and possibly a refreshing dip in the river. Then it is off to the Namib Desert to the quaint town of Aus where we will rest for the night.

Day 6: Aus – Luderitz – Kolmaskop – Aus, Nambia

We arise early to cross the open desert plains that will lead us to the Atlantic Ocean and our first stop of the day at the Ghost Town of Kolmanskop. This area used to be a working Diamond mine, but now the town is slowly being reclaimed by the ever-shifting desert sands. We enjoy an entertaining tour that leads us through the historical sites of the town. Next on the agenda is the small harbour town of Luderitz, a very inhospitable coast. We take a trip to the cross planted by Dias in 1487 and learn more about this town. In the afternoon we head back to the desert with a stop-over where we spend time with a colony of wild desert horses. We enjoy a lunch which will be at your own expense.

Day 7: Namib Nature Reserve, Namibia

An exciting day awaits us after a leisurely morning walk into the town and visiting a local hotel. We travel into the heart of the Namib with its wide open plains, red dunes and huge mountains of stone. Over the following two nights we stay in a desert lodge nestled against a rocky outcrop. This is a conservancy that is part of the Namib Rand Nature Reserve. We will have plenty of time to see the variety of desert-adapted ecology and wildlife as we go on various day and night game drives.

Day 8: Desert Reserve, Namibia

Waking up to the stillness of the desert that surrounds us is a wonderful way to begin the day. This is a protected wilderness that is subsidised by the tourism industry where animals roam freely over an area of 22 000 ha. Today our qualified guide will teach you more about the animals that survive here in these natural surroundings.

Day 9: Sossusvlei Dunes, Nambia

Another early start as we head off across the endless desert plains on to Sesriem Canyon and the Sossusvlei dunes – the highest in the world. We will explore the canyon on foot for most of our journey, but will then use a 4×4 to cover the remaining area. We will climb awe-inspiring dunes before we end the day off at our accommodation in the desert.

Day 10 – 11: Swakopmund, Namibia

After crossing the Namib Naukluft Park we reach the dramatic Lunar Landscape peppered with ancient Welwitschia plants. Then it is off to Walvis Bay, a coastal town where we can spend some time by the Lagoon. Our journey continues as we head to Swakopmund where we will spend the following two nights in a comfortable lodge. There is plenty of time to explore this holiday town before sitting together and enjoying an evening meal at your own expense. There are optional activities here such as quad biking, sand boarding and sky diving. Both evening meals can be enjoyed at a local restaurant which will be for your own expense.

Day 12: Skeleton Coast – Brandberg Mountain, Nambia

On the cards today is a trip to the barren Skeleton Coast – a scene of shipwrecks that washed up here years ago. Then we enjoy some time with a large Seal Colony at Cape Cross before setting off through the desert to see the bushman paintings in Brandberg. We also hope to see the rare desert elephants. We will sleep tonight at the foot of the mountain.

Day 13: Twyfelfontein – Palmwag, Namibia

Prepare for a busy day today. We start off by visiting the Organ Pipes and the well-known old rock engravings at Twyfelfontein. We will then head to Damaraland and cross the Grootberg mountain pass where we will camp near the oasis of Palmwag. This is home to the rare Desert Rhino, elephants and many other animals that have adapted to the environment. We hope to have many close encounters with these animals today.

Day 14 – 15: Etosha National Park, Namibia

One of the highlights of our trip – Etosha National Park awaits us. Here we will spend two nights game viewing as there are so many animals to spot and things to learn about this Park. On one of the evenings we will go to a floodlit waterhole where the animals flock for a cool evening drink. On both nights we will stay in one of the comfortable rest camps.

Okaukuejo-Camp

Day 16: Etosha – Waterberg, Namibia

Another early morning game drive where new wildlife encounters await us. We will then exit the park and travel down to the Waterberg Plateau National Park with its ecologically diverse ecosystem with over 200 bird species and perhaps a sighting of the rare small antelope. An afternoon hike will allow us to enjoy the views of the Kalahari from the summit. We take shelter at the base tonight.

Day 17: Windhoek, Namibia

We pack up this morning and head back to civilization in Windhoek. The drive will take us approximately 5 hours and we should arrive by 13h00. You are welcome to book a post tour night through us. If you are leaving in the afternoon, please allow for a check in time and an hour for the airport transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions

This tour involves a fair amount of walking, so a small daypack is advisable. A sleeping bag, towel and pillow are required for this tour, but all linen is provided. Seasonal Malaria precautions are advisable and are locally obtainable. During winter the nightime temperatures can fall below zero and during summer the daytime temperatures can reach the forties, so be prepared for this. Most major currencies can be exchanged on arrival in Windhoek and other centres, but banking hours do apply. Credit cards are generally accepted. Our price includes transport, food, coffee, tea, and fruit juice at breakfast, as well as a professional guide, group equipment, accommodation, permits and park entry fees. The price does not include alcohol and soft drinks, tips, curios and optional extras. Before departure clients will be required to enter into an agreement regarding our booking conditions and general information. Clients are required to have their own comprehensive personal travel insurance. Tipping In Africa it is customary to tip, however, this is not compulsory in any way. It is seen as a common courtesy that if you receive good service, you reward the service provider (guide, waitron etc.) with a tip. The amount you decide on is for your own discretion.
