Departing from the ‘Mother City’, and following a visit to Bloubergstrand for a view of the majestic Table Mountain from across the bay, we journey northward through the ‘Swartland’ and along the West Coast making our way into Namaqualand. In the beginning of Spring, this normally desolate area comes to life with the blossoming of countless desert-adapted flower species.

Enjoy the contrast of scenery on our journey today. From vast open spaces to dramatic rock formations in the Cederberg. Our journey is long (570kms) to our accommodation in Springbok.

After our gear has been packed into our two-man canoes, we head off into the wild. The Orange River forms an incredible sight – a green ribbon snaking its way through the desert and enormous mountains of the Richtersveld National Park. We spend the evening camping beneath the skies.

Day 3: Fish River Canyon, Namibia

Today we make our way directly to the magnificent Fish River Canyon, the second biggest of its kind in the world. This 160 km long ravine has been carved over hundreds of millions of years as a testament to nature’s inexorable power and as evidence of past ice ages and raging torrents. Currently, the Fish River only flows in the summer months, resulting in pools of stagnant water during the dry winter months. As we peer over the lip of the canyon, we will be able to observe the work of nature. Hobas is a nearby campground where we camp.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Hobas Camp – Camping (Two man dome tent)
Included Highlights: Fish River Canyon
Distance: 160 km

Day 4 – 5: Fish River Canyon – Namib, Namibia

Taking a beautiful scenic route into the true Namib, we arrive at Greenfire Desert Camp, our home for the next two nights. Our camp is located on our private Nature Reserve situated within the Namibrand Nature Reserve and is home to a variety of desert-adapted animals and plant life. The camp is incredibly constructed against a rock outcrop between the giant mountains and red dune-fields. The reserve offers visitors a unique and private desert experience, spectacular views, and the opportunity to explore the vibrant, living desert, which is home to plants and animals that have adapted ingeniously to its environment.

The following day our guide accompanies us on a morning walk so we can gain a closer understanding of the desert and its unique geology and ecology. In the heat of the day, it is common for guests to relax at the camp, enjoy a cold drink and the plunge pool, while the energetic are free to explore nearby rock formations, birdwatch, or sit alone on a rock, captivated by the changing colors of the vast landscape. Afterwards, we take a desert drive in an open vehicle in search of gemsbok and bat-eared foxes, and then have a traditional sundowner drink while watching the red sunset. Once it has become dark, we slowly drive back to the campsite, hoping to see some of the nocturnal animals common to the region, such as porcupines, aardvarks, and brown hyenas.
