21 Day Cape Town to Livingstone Safari (Premium Camping) Itinerary

Day 1: Cape Town, South Africa

We suggest you arrive a day early so that you can explore the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town during the day before meeting your group and your Tour Leader in the evening at 18:00 to get acquainted and review your trip details. Cape Town has much to offer the curious traveller from a variety of beautiful beaches to culinary tastes like Cape Malay curries, and shops and craft markets at the V&A Waterfront. Take a boat trip to the world famous Robben Island where former President Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison, visit Cape Point or take the cable car up Table Mountain to enjoy a panoramic view of Cape Town.

Day 2: Cape Town to Trawal, South Africa

We leave the beautiful city of Cape Town behind to depart on the first leg of the journey to the vicinity of the Cederburg Mountains. We will visit a vineyard where wine is produced for the local cellars and you have the option of doing some wine tasting. Surrounded by the mountains you will experience peace and tranquility amidst the fauna and flora of this area.

Day 3: Trawal to Gariep River, South Africa

We will head North today to the Northern Cape’s vast fields of wild flowers (in bloom between August and November) and visit a Kids Project where you can learn about the running of the local orphanage and primary school at Kamieskroon Children’s Trust. Fields of colour explode from horizon to horizon to life during Spring. The Namaqualand daisies pop up from their slumber covering the ground with yellow hues. After we spend time in this area, we continue north to reach the Namibian border by midday. We can enjoy a spectacular sunset from a great vantage point on top of a hill.

Day 4: Gariep River to the Fish River Canyon, Namibia

An early morning promises a spectacular sunrise over the Gariep River. You can enjoy a quiet morning or go for an optional canoe trip down the river. Later on we will walk around the Fish River Canyon which is the largest canyon in Africa. The Canyon brings a vast amount of tourists to the country and you will have the privilege of going there. The entrance fees to the canyon is included.

Day 5: Fish River Canyon to Sesriem, Namibia

Prepare for a long day as we drive north to the Namib Desert through Sesriem passing through the small towns of Bethanien and Helmeringhausen, neighbouring farm settlements. We arrive at Sesriem Canyon and admire the imposing red sand dunes in the distance that form a gateway into the Namib Desert. The next morning you will visit Sossusvlei and Deadvlei. Entrance fees to the Namib Naukluft National Park is included.

Day 6: Sesriem to Boesman’s camp, Namibia

Another early rise will ensure a beautiful African desert sunrise over the dunes. We will climb Dune 45 and then continue on to Sossusvlei, where the dunes stretch on from horizon to horizon. In the afternoon you can take a guided walk where you will learn about the survival skills of the San bushmen, as well as other inhabitants of the desert.

Day 7: Boesman’s Camp to Swakopmund, Namibia

The holiday town of Swakopmund along the Atlantic coast is our next stop on the tour.  We will cross the Tropic of Capricorn and drive through the surreal landscapes of the Kuiseb and Gaub passes. You can explore Swakopmund at your leisure and enjoy a wide variety of activities such as quad biking, sand boarding, skydiving etc. This beach resort is still influenced by German architecture and its many German-speaking inhabitants.

Day 8: Swakopmund, Namibia

There are a lot activities in Swakopmund offering a variety of activities. Enjoy a walk along the beach and try taking a dip in the cold waters or visit the Kristal Gallery where you can see the largest Quartz Crystal Cluster on display (weighing 14 100 kgs). There are loads of curio shops or bookshops to wander around in and find great souvenirs. If you prefer something a bit more active and adventurous you can try out the optional activities.

Day 9: Swakopmund to Brandberg, Namibia

We continue north, with Brandberg the next destination where you have the option of visiting the famous White Lady Bushmen painting in the Brandberg Mountain which is the highest point in Namibia standing at 2,573m above sea level. The walk is not that challenging, but the heat is! Be sure to take protection with a hat, sunglasses, comfortable closed shoes and plenty water and sunscreen. You will be rewarded with breathtaking scenery along the riverbed with multi-coloured rocks that takes on various shades of flaming orange in the late afternoon, giving the mountain its name.

Day 10: Brandberg to Kamanjab, Namibia

We will be saying about 20km outside of Kamanjab on a family farm. Here you can go on guided tours and visit an authentic Himba Village. You can find out what a smoke bath is and other interesting tribal customs. You will also learn about their ancestral beliefs and the herbal medicines they use. The Himba have very unusual hairstyles and jewellery that tell a story about their status which you will learn about.

Day 11: Kamanjab to Etosha, Namibia

We have an exciting day of game driving ahead through Etosha National Park where you can spot 100 species of mammals including the endangered black rhino. We will also go to the watering hole where you get plenty of wildlife frequenting the area. If you are a twitcher there is a wide variety of birds such as the Kori Bastard, ostrich and vultures. At night you can settle around the waterholes watching these animals bathe and quench their thirst.

Day 12: Etosha National Park, Namibia

Enjoy a full day of game driving today in the air-conditioned vehicle as you gaze through the large windows and watch the elephants bathe themselves in white dust. We will set up camp in the newest part of the park where you can fall asleep to the echoes of the hyena under a star-speckled sky.

Day 13: Etosha National Park to Windhoek, Namibia

If you have booked the shorter tour this is where you will spend your last few hours before heading home. Be sure to explore the town with its many shops and enjoy a farewell dinner at one of the well known restaurants. We will change vehicles and our crew here which will give you the opportunity to meet new people. We assure you that the vehicle and crew will be of the same standard as before and will in fact enhance your experience.

Day 14: Windhoek to Ghanzi, Namibia

Today is a long day of driving through the eastern part of Namibia as we cross the border into Botswana and head into the heart of the Kalahari. The San Bushmen are eager to meet you and share their ancients customs with you. In the evening you will be treated to an ancient dance ritual that will be performed around the campfire under a roof of stars.

Day 15: Ghanzi to Maun, Botswana

This morning you can enjoy a morning walk with the San Bushmen as they show you how they survive in the bush over years of passing on their knowledge from generation to generation. We will arrive in Maun after lunchtime where you have the option of taking an amazing flight over the Okavango Delta for a bird’s eye view. The Okavango Delta is a vast magnitude of land and water with an intricate system of channels and islands. You should be able to see pods of hippos and herds of elephants from the air.

Optional Okavango Delta Fly-in (Ghanzi to Okavango Delta)

Today we leave early morning for a long drive north-west across the Botswana interior towards Maun, Botswana’s fifth largest town. Once you arrive in Maun you will have the option to go on a 2-night fly-in safari into the Okavango Delta. This camp is accessible by light aircraft only, a 20-minute flight from Maun. On arrival, you will be met by your personal guide and welcomed to the island. Your camp for the next 2 nights is situated on the edge of Chief’s Island, deep in the heart of the Okavango, bordering the Moremi Game Reserve.

Day 16: Maun, Botswana

We will have a unique and relaxing way of travelling today as we take a mokoro ride through the reeds and winding pathways of the Delta. You will be guided by a poler who knows the channels well and you can cruise by while taking amazing photographs of the wildlife. We will stop for lunch along the way and take a walk amongst nature. We will head back to Maun just as the sun starts to set and the fading light brings an end to a wonderful day.

OPTIONAL OKAVANGO DELTA FLY-IN 2 NIGHT DELTA EXPERIENCE

Day 16: Okavango Delta

We awake early today and go for a nature walk with a professional guide before returning for a late breakfast. You can then relax at camp by having a nap or cooling off in the fresh water. If you would like to explore for the day we will be happy to pack you a picnic lunch. There is also the opportunity to explore the delta via mokoro which is a dugout canoe. You will be poled through the reeds while you can sit back and relax or take photographs. The next morning you will fly back to Maun.

Day 17: Maun, Botswana

We travel to the village of Nata to the world famous watering hole of Elephant Sands. The watering hole is a high traffic area where you can see wild dogs, antelope and plenty of elephants. The elephants also walk through the campsite which is an exciting experience and a very close encounter.

Day 17: Maun to Elephant Sands

After an early breakfast you will catch a flight back to Maun where you will join up with the rest of the group. We set out for Elephant Sands which is close to the village of Nata. Elephant Sands is popular for its watering hole where you can expect to see wild dogs, antelope and plenty of elephants.

Day 18: Elephant Sands to Chobe River, Botswana

We continue on to the small town of Kasane close to Chobe National Park and the Chobe River. An afternoon sunset boat cruise will give you spectacular views of the park. Game such as elephant, buffalo, kudu, bushbuck, hippo, giraffe and sable are commonly seen along the river edge, and it’s a birdwatcher’s paradise during the summer months. You can choose to go on a photo boat safari where you can take amazing shots of the sunset and the wildlife.

Day 19: Elephant Sands to Chobe River, Botswana

We start the day with an inclusive game drive in Chobe National Park in search of wild animals from the luxury of the air-conditioned vehicle. We then cross into Zambia and take a short drive to the highlight of the tour – Victoria Falls. You will also have time here to explore the charming town. The falls is breathtaking as the water plunges hundreds of feet into the gorge below and is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

Day 20: Chobe River (Kasane) to Livingstone (Victoria Falls), Zambia

Or you can choose a half or full day white water rafting activity closer to the Zambezi River. You also have the choice of joining a sunset cruise for your final evening together to say farewell with a toast to the African sunset.
