22 Day Cape Town to Livingstone Safari (Premium Camping) Itinerary

Day 1: Cape Town, South Africa

We suggest you arrive a day early so that you can explore the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town during the day before meeting your group and your Tour Leader in the evening at 18:00 to get acquainted and review your trip details. Cape Town has much to offer the curious traveller from a variety of beautiful beaches to culinary tastes like Cape Malay curries, and shops and craft markets at the V&A Waterfront. Take a boat trip to the world famous Robben Island where former President Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years in prison, visit Cape Point or take the cable car up Table Mountain to enjoy a panoramic view of Cape Town.

Day 2: Cape Town to Trawal, South Africa

We leave the beautiful city of Cape Town behind to depart on the first leg of the journey to the vicinity of the Cederburg Mountains. We will visit a vineyard where wine is produced for the local cellars and you have the option of doing some wine tasting. Surrounded by the mountains you will experience peace and tranquility amidst the fauna and flora of this area.

Day 3: Trawal to Gariep River, South Africa

We will head North today to the Northern Cape’s vast fields of wild flowers (in bloom between August and November) and visit a Kids Project where you can learn about the running of the local orphanage and primary school at Kamieskroon Children’s Trust. Fields of colour explode from horizon to horizon to life during Spring. The Namaqualand daisies pop up from their slumber covering the ground with yellow hues. After we spend time in this area, we continue north to reach the Namibian border by midday. We can enjoy a spectacular sunset from a great vantage point on top of a hill.

Day 4: Gariep River to the Fish River Canyon, Namibia

An early morning promises a spectacular sunrise over the Gariep River. You can enjoy a quiet morning or go for an optional canoe trip down the river. Later on we will walk around the Fish River Canyon which is the largest canyon in Africa. The Canyon brings a vast amount of tourists to the country and you will have the privilege of going there. The entrance fees to the canyon is included.

Day 5: Fish River Canyon to Sesriem, Namibia

Prepare for a long day as we drive north to the Namib Desert through Sesriem passing through the small towns of Bethanien and Helmeringhausen, neighbouring farm settlements. We arrive at Sesriem Canyon and admire the imposing red sand dunes in the distance that form a gateway into the Namib Desert. The next morning you will visit Sossusvlei and Deadvlei. Entrance fees to the Namib Naukluft National Park is included.

Day 6: Sesriem to Boesman’s camp, Namibia

Another early rise will ensure a beautiful African desert sunrise over the dunes. We will climb Dune 45 and then continue on to Sossusvlei, where the dunes stretch on from horizon to horizon. In the afternoon you can take a guided walk where you will learn about the survival skills of the San bushmen, as well as other inhabitants of the desert.

Day 7: Boesman’s Camp to Swakopmund, Namibia

The holiday town of Swakopmund along the Atlantic coast is our next stop on the tour.  We will cross the Tropic of Capricorn and drive through the surreal landscapes of the Kuiseb and Gaub passes. You can explore Swakopmund at your leisure and enjoy a wide variety of activities such as quad biking, sand boarding, skydiving etc. This beach resort is still influenced by German architecture and its many German-speaking inhabitants.

Day 8: Swakopmund, Namibia

There are a lot activities in Swakopmund offering a variety of activities. Enjoy a walk along the beach and try taking a dip in the cold waters or visit the Kristal Gallery where you can see the largest Quartz Crystal Cluster on display (weighing 14 100 kgs). There are loads of curio shops or bookshops to wander around in and find great souvenirs. If you prefer something a bit more active and adventurous you can try out the optional activities.

Day 9: Swakopmund to Brandberg, Namibia

We continue north, with Brandberg the next destination where you have the option of visiting the famous White Lady Bushmen painting in the Brandberg Mountain which is the highest point in Namibia standing at 2,573m above sea level. The walk is not that challenging, but the heat is! Be sure to take protection with a hat, sunglasses, comfortable closed shoes and plenty water and sunscreen. You will be rewarded with breathtaking scenery along the riverbed with multi-coloured rocks that takes on various shades of flaming orange in the late afternoon, giving the mountain its name.

Day 10: Brandberg to Twyfelfontein, Namibia

We take a short drive to the World Heritage Site of Twyfelfontein which is known for its ancient art and sacred rituals that have been engraved forever. It is a World Heritage Site. At Twyfelfontein you will have the opportunity to discover more about one of Namibia’s oldest tribes, the Damara. You have the option of visiting the Damara Living Museum which is a reconstruction of the traditional culture of the Damara. You will also have the opportunity to do an optional guided walk to an engraving site.

Day 11: Twyfelfontein to Opuwo, Namibia

We head off in the early hours of the morning for a drive to Opuwo. Today we go on a guided walk to the traditional Himba village to learn about their colourful culture. The Himba tribe live in such a way so as to respect and maintain the traditions of their ancestors. The women are distinctive in their dress-style by wearing red ochre paint that distinguishes them from men and protects them from the harsh sun.

Day 12: Opuwo to Etosha National Park, Namibia

We make our way to Etosha National Park travelling through the vast expanses of Northern Namibia. A game drive will allow us to see elephants, antelope, lions and many other animals at the waterhole. It is also a birdwatcher’s paradise where you can look out for the famous Kori Bustard, ostrich, several vultures and types of eagles. If you travel during the rainy season you can find flamingos and pelicans foraging in the waters. There is a waterhole near the campsite where you can view more animals after sunset which is safe and flood-lit. Our camp tonight is within Etosha National Park (entrance fee included).

Day 13: Etosha National Park, Namibia

Today is a full day of game driving, but you will be in the comfortable air-conditioned vehicle. From here you can watch elephants bathe themselves in the white dust of the area or capture images of giraffes in the wide open plains. There is the option of going on a night game drive. Fall asleep to the roars of lions or the cry of the hyena.

Day 14: Etosha National Park to Windhoek, Namibia

We are off to Windhoek today where you can spend a few hours exploring Windhoek. For some of the travellers it will be your last day and others may join. You will spend the night in the comfort of a lodge with twin rooms. Dinner will be at one of the local restaurants and will be for your own account. The vehicles and crew may change today, but you can expect the same standard of service. Enjoy the opportunity of getting to know new people.

Day 15: Windhoek to Ghanzi, Botswana

We take a long drive through the eastern part of Namibia where we will cross the border into Botswana into the heart of the Kalahari Desert. We will spend some time with the San Bushmen finding out about their ancient traditions and how they have adapted to fit into the new world. You can also choose to enjoy a dance ritual performed around the camp fire under the starry skies of Ghanzi.

Day 16: Ghanzi to Maun, Botswana

This morning you can choose to go on a morning walk with the San Bushmen where they will show their remarkable survival skills that have been past on from generation to generation. We will arrive in Maun after lunch where you have the option of taking a light wing aircraft over the Okavango Delta. This bird’s eye view allows you to see the magnitude of this massive mix of land and water that creates a beautiful picture from above. You can also see herds of elephant, giraffe, buffalo and hippo from the air.

OPTIONAL OKAVANGO DELTA FLY-IN 2 NIGHT DELTA EXPERIENCE

Day 16: Ghanzi to Okavango Delta

We travel today along the north-west across the Botswana interior towards Maun, Botswana’s fifth largest town. In Maun you have the option of going on a 2 night fly-in safari onto the Okavango. You will be welcomed onto the island by a personal guide and stay here for 2 nights at the edge of Chief’s Island.

Day 17: Maun, Botswana

Today you will experience a new way of travelling in a traditional dug-out canoe – the mokoro. Your designated poler will guide you through the waterways of the Okavango where you have a fabulous close encounter with wildlife. The length of your mokoro journey will depend on the water levels. We will stop for lunch at an island and enjoy a nature walk of a few hours. Then head back to Maun again in your mokoro enjoying a last hour or two on the water while the late afternoon sun starts heading for the horizon.

Day 17: Okavango Delta

After an early morning walk with our professional guide we will enjoy a late breakfast and then take a rest by reading a book or dipping into the cool waters of the Delta. Once the midday heat has passed over our heads we will venture out in search of bird and wildlife. If you would like to explore for the whole day we will pack a picnic lunch for you. You will also have the pleasure of going in a traditional dug-out canoe (mokoro) and see the nearby islands. Your camp will be in the African bush where you will fall asleep to the sounds of the hippos grunting. The next morning you will fly to Maun and meet the rest of the group.

Day 18: Maun to Elephant Sands, Botswana

The tour takes us to close to the village of Nata to Elephant Sands which is well-known for its waterhole. Here you can see wild dogs, different antelope species and of course elephants that walk through the campsite searching for fresh water. You will be able to get quite close on foot.

Day 18: Maun to Elephant Sands

After an early breakfast you will catch a flight back to Maun where you will join up with the rest of the group. We set out for Elephant Sands which is close to the village of Nata. Elephant Sands is popular for its watering hole where you can expect to see wild dogs, antelope and plenty of elephants.

Day 19: Elephant Sands to Chobe River, Botswana

We continue on to the small town of Kasane close to Chobe National Park and the Chobe River. An afternoon sunset boat cruise will give you spectacular views of the park. Game such as elephant, buffalo, kudu, bushbuck, hippo, giraffe and sable are commonly seen along the river edge, and it’s a birdwatcher’s paradise during the summer months. You can choose to go on a photo boat safari where you can take amazing shots of the sunset and the wildlife.

Day 20: Chobe River (Kasane) to Livingstone (Victoria Falls), Zambia

We start the day with an inclusive game drive in Chobe National Park in search of wild animals from the luxury of the air-conditioned vehicle. We then cross into Zambia and take a short drive to the highlight of the tour – Victoria Falls. You will also have time here to explore the charming town. The falls is breathtaking as the water plunges hundreds of feet into the gorge below and is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

You also have the choice of joining a sunset cruise for your final evening together to say farewell with a toast to the African sunset.
