10 Day Highlights of East Africa Tour Itinerary

Day 1

Nairobi – Masai Mara, Kenya

In the morning, we depart from the bustling city of Nairobi to ascend the incline to our first stop, a viewpoint overlooking a portion of the extraordinary Great Rift Valley. As we descend into the Rift Valley, we enter Masai territory where these farmers are frequently spotted tending to their livestock on the roadsides. Passing through the town of Norak, we continue our travels, possibly catching a glimpse of some gorgeous wildlife along the way. We arrive at our campsite in the late afternoon.

Meals Included: Lunch, Dinner

Included Activity: Masai Mara Game Reserve excursion

Day 2

Masai Mara, Kenya

We leave briefly after the sun rises and embark on a game drive into the Masai Mara Reserve. This reserve is famous for being one of East Africa’s top National Reserves and is home to a broad selection of wildlife species. It is perhaps most well-known for hosting the magnificent Annual Migration, consisting of massive herds of over one million, including wildebeest, zebra, and Thomson’s gazelle that all cross over from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. The Masai Mara is most visited between the months of July and October, when these impressive herds feast on the luscious, fresh grazing available in the reserve. Africa’s predators are usually close behind these herbivores and are frequently seen at a kill during this time of year. We game drive some more through a portion of the park, searching for the Big 5 as well as many other species of wildlife who make this reserve their home.

Following our day of game spotting, we have the opportunity to pay a visit to one of the close by Masai Manyattas. These are family compounds where the Masai live in their traditional ways. During the night, we gather around an open campfire and marvel at the magnificent sunset provided to us by the glorious skies of Africa.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3

Masai Mara to Lake Nakuru, Kenya

Leaving Masai Mara we head towards our  overnight stop in the area of Lake Nakuru National Park. Today we will meet local kids and spend time with the EAMO; East African Mission Organisation.

EAMO: East African Mission Organisation

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4

Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya

In the morning, we start exploring the stunning Lake Nakuru National Park, renowned for the countless flamingos that are attracted to the edges of this soda lake. The actual numbers of these birds varies depending on the water level that, when low, almost transforms the lake into a haze of pink. The park was initially established as a sanctuary for black and white rhino, which are often spotted here. Our day is spent seeking out these gorgeous creatures as well as the elusive leopard, whilst on the way coming into contact with buffalo, giraffe, numerous antelope and the occasional hippopotamus.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Included Activity: Game drives in Lake Nakuru National Park

Optional Activity: Spending time with the kids at the orphanage / sponsoring pens, pencils, notepads and so forth.

Day 5

Lake Nakuru to Kisii/ Kericho, Kenya

Following breakfast we depart from the Masai Mara and make our way to Kisii/Kericho, passing through the scenic tea plantations en route. These towns are the primary commercial hubs in the Gusi Highlands, where cash crops such as tea and coffee flourish due to its equatorial climate. We re-stock our supplies before journeying to Tanzania the next day.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6

Musoma, Tanzania

We leave Kenya and make our way south into Tanzania. Once we’ve completed border formalities we travel through the picturesque landscape next to Lake Victoria, Africa’s biggest lake. We spend the evening at a campsite on the banks of Lake Victoria, in the fishing town of Musoma.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Once we’ve re-stocked our supplies for the following few days, we make our way to the Serengeti National Park after lunch. The Serengeti (Masai for ‘endless plains’) is renowned for its massive population of wildlife, specifically large cats, and for the yearly migration of millions of wildebeest, zebra and Thomson’s gazelles. We make our way into the Park through the lesser-travelled western corridor and game drive on the way to our campsite in the middle of the Park. This evening we bush camp in the wilderness, encircled by the sounds of the African wild, disturbed only by the howls of distant animals. In the morning we embark on another game drive and explore the terrain searching for wildlife. If luck is on our side we might get to spot some of Africa’s Big 5!

Included Activity: Excursion to Serengeti National Park

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 8

Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

We awake early to game drive through the Serengeti National Park. We then travel to the southern region of the Park where we have an opportunity to witness the endless plains this Park is famous for. We make our way across the Serengeti and into the Ngorongoro Conservation region at lunch time and start our ascension up the steep Crater’s rim. This evening’s camp on the crater edge harshly contrasts the warmer plains below. We encourage you to bring your winter clothes along due to the temperature drop at night.

Included Activity: Ngorongoro Crater Excursion

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 9

Ngorongoro Crater to Arusha, Tanzania

The Ngorongoro Crater is a natural gem with its walls 600 metres high and 20 kilometres long. The rim of the Crater provides incredible views, but the true size of this caldera is only really valued from the floor where the abundance of its wildlife inhabitants is apparent. The Crater houses almost every species of African animal and provides you with an opportunity to view an amazing population of East African mammals like elephant, rhino, buffalo, hippo, lion and plain’s game. After our morning spent game driving through the Crater, we head to our campsite situated just outside of Arusha where we spend the night exchanging stories of our wildlife encounters.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 10

Arusha to Nairobi, Kenya

Following a satisfying breakfast, we start our travels back to Nairobi. When we arrive in the early evening, we swap contact details and go our separate ways.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
