Nairobi – Masai Mara National Reserve,Kenya
In the morning, we depart from the vibrant city of Nairobi to begin the climb up to our first stop, a viewpoint overlooking a portion of the extraordinary Great Rift Valley. As we head down into the Rift Valley we enter Masai territory, where these farmers are frequently spotted tending to their livestock on the roadsides. Passing through the town of Narok, to the west of Nairobi, we continue our travels, possibly catching a glimpse of some gorgeous wildlife along the way. When we finally arrive at the park gate, we make a turn just before the Reserve Entrance to park at our camp where we will have time to rest up before heading out on our first game drive through the Park, and eventually make our way back to camp in the evening for supper and a good night’s sleep.

Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya
We leave briefly after the sun rises and embark on a game drive into the incredible Masai Mara Reserve, famous as one of East Africa’s top National Reserves and home to a broad selection of wildlife species. It is perhaps most well-known for hosting the magnificent Annual Migration, consisting of massive herds of over one million, including wildebeest, zebra, and Thomson’s gazelle, that all cross over from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. The Masai Mara is most visited between the months of July and October, when these impressive herds feast on the luscious, fresh grazing available in the reserve. Africa’s predators can usually be spotted close behind these herbivores during the Migration, and are frequently seen over a kill during this time of year. We game drive some more through a portion of the park, searching for the Big 5, as well as many other species of wildlife who make this reserve their home.
Following our day of game spotting, we are given the opportunity to pay a visit to one of the close by Masai Manyattas – family compounds in which the Masai live out their traditional lives. In the night we gather together around an open, crackling campfire and spend some time marvelling at the magnificent sunset provided to us by the glorious skies of Africa before catching some up on some well-deserved rest.

Masai Mara – Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya
We depart from the Masai Mara and make our way into the Great Rift Valley today – a massive cleft in the earth that stretches from Egypt’s Red Sea to Madagascar. The Valley is peppered with soda water lakes, as well as the occasional freshwater lake. One of the gems in Kenya’s crown, Lake Nakuru National Park, is dominated by its central alkaline lake – Lake Elementaita – which attracts masses of bird species, majority of which are flamingos that feed on the lake’s algae. Sometimes these birds congregate in massive gatherings that create a pink ‘fringe’ on the lake shore. Our game drives through the Park today surround the lake, giving us lots of time to observe the plentiful birdlife, including flamingos, pelicans, storks, ibis, kingfishers, jacanas, rollers and the glossy starling. Bigger animals that live within the reserve include rhino, zebra, buffalo, impala, colobus monkeys, and the rare Rothschild giraffe. Harder to see, but there in any case, are the elusive leopard and lion. We depart from the Park later on in the day and head to the close by Nakuru for our tourist class hotel lodging where we enjoy a delicious supper and spend the evening in peaceful rest.

If time allows, we might make a stop en route to have a look at local craft markets where you can try your hand at bartering and purchase some final souvenirs to take home. We typically arrive in Nairobi in the afternoon where our trip comes to an end.
