20 Day Tour of South Africa Overland (North) Itinerary

Day 1

 Cultural Cape Town – Stellenbosch, South Africa

The tour begins with an enriching cultural experience in Cape Town. Making your way from Distric Six to Langa And Khayelitsha – Informal settlements in Cape Town. Guided by a local, the cultural tour is usually in small vehicles. After leaving Cape Town we travel a short distance towards Stellenbosch.

If you are taking part in the Cultural Tour, you will be fetched at the office at 08:00am the morning and meet up with the truck and crew in the mother city after your tour. There will be a wine tasting tour in Stellenbosch as well as a cheese and wine tasting and afterwards we drive to our accommodation where your guide will brief you on what to expect during the next couple of days. Enjoy an optional dinner our this evening.

Day 2

Route 62 – Oudtshoorn, South Africa

Today we drive along the famous Route 62 towards Oudtshoorn and, time permitting, stop at Ronnie’s Sex Shop which is not a sex shop at all, but rather an interesting countryside pub. When we reach Oudtshoorn you get the opportunity to visit a popular Farm of Oudtshoorn, the Ostrich Farm. We will spend the evening in this town tonight.

Day 3

Heart of Garden Route, South Africa

Rising early we travel to the Cango Caves and enjoy a guided tour of the caves. In the late afternoon we pass through the majestic Outeniqua Mountains to Knysna. Keep an eye out for whales and dolphins as we cross Mossel Bay. In the afternoon, you get the time to discover Knysna – one of South Africa’s most popular coastal towns.

Day 4 -5

Tsitsikamma National Park, South Africa

The morning is spent relaxing on the beaches of Plettenberg Bay.  Today you have the chance to participate in the activities available and explore the surroundings here. To make sure your time is spent well, the truck will organise a schedule so that you are free to join or leave the places that may be of interest to you.

Our next destination is the Tsitsikamma National Park, which is a nature reserve that extends from forest towards the coastline and up to the mountains of Tsitsikamma. Here you can spot the most wonderful tropical birds and plant life. In the afternoon, you can explore the entire area from the forest up to the mountain and coastline. Here, you will have plenty of time to plan some wonderful walks and hikes in one of the most treasured South African parks. The first few hours will be spent participating in the famous Otter Trail Hike (included in your Activity Package). For the adrenaline seekers, the nearby Bloukrans Bridge offers the world’s highest bungee jump at 216m!

Day 6 - 7

Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa

We will continue our tour today, travelling along the coastline and up to the third largest National Park of South Africa, The Addo Elephant National Park. This Park is home to many of Africa’s big game. Our vehicle gives us a better view on our game drive during the afternoon, especially for the photographers amongst us. We make a stop in the surfing city of Jeffreys Bay, well known for its waves, you have a chance to visit a quaint surfing museum or simply enjoy a cup of coffee while watching the infamous waves. The following morning we spend time exploring the Addo Elephant Park on foot allowing us to enjoy the little things we miss from the truck. In the afternoon we spend more time exploring the park.

Day 8

Graaff Reinet, South Africa

We leave the Addo National Park today  and we travel to the heartland of the Great Karoo. Upon arrival we enjoy a historical walking tour with out local guide where you will be introduced to the enriching history of the fourth oldest town in South Africa ‘ the gem of the Karoo”. An optional sundowner visit to the Valley of Desolation is available this evening for those wanting to participate in the activity.

Day 9 - 10

Lesotho – Malealea, Lesotho

Today we will make our entrance into the incredible mountain kingdom of Lesotho. Lesotho is one of the world’s highest countries, lying over 1000m above sea level. The following day we wake up early and are given an opportunity to partake in a Pony Trekking Excursion through the secluded hills of Lesotho, accompanied by local guides. On your way back to our camping site, the group will visit the local village and school.

Day 11 - 12

South Africa – Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park, South Africa

The Drakensberg Mountains range is comprised of South Africa’s highest and most incredible mountains. We explore the mountain trails and take our time to enjoy the breathtaking sights in the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg (Royal Natal) National Park. On our second day, we go for a guided hike to see some of the renowned San rock paintings.

Day 13

KwaZulu-Natal Coast – Durban, South Africa

We will travel downwards as we leave the mountains and make our way to the KwaZulu-Natal Coast. The lively city of Durban is South Africa’s most famous surfing spot. We will spend our night in the centre of the city and it is here that you will get the chance to taste the spicy Indian cuisine and enjoy this coastal city’s vibrant nightlife.

Day 14

iSimangaliso Wetland Park, South Africa

This morning is spent at leisure enjoying the picturesque beaches and Indian Ocean. If you looking for more excitement, feel free to visit Ushaka Marine World. Leaving the city behind we make our way along the beautiful coastline to Zululand. Later in the day we have a chance to participate in an enriching Zulu Cultural Evening. Here you are taught how to greet in the Zulu language, count as well as enjoy a sample of the local beer made from the local Ilala Palm.

Day 15

Hluhluwe – Umfolozi Game Reserve, South Africa

In the morning we travel to the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve for a game drive in open 4×4 vehicles. The park is the only conservation managed by the state in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, where all the Big Five can be found. The park now has the largest population of white rhino in the world, due to conservation efforts. In the afternoon, we cross the border into Swaziland and enjoy a boat cruise on St Lucia estuary.

Day 16

Swaziland – Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, Swaziland

Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary is Swaziland’s oldest sanctuary, covering a surface of 4,560 hectares. No predators can be found in this section, which gives the opportunity for self-guided hikes. Hiking is a terrific way to get close to nature and wildlife. Take time participating in the mountain biking or visiting the Chief’s village.

Day 17 - 18

South Africa – Kruger National Park, South Africa

Start the day with a nature walk and we visit a craft market before making our way across the border into South Africa again today and continue to travel to the Greater Kruger National Park for two memorable days of game driving. The Greater Kruger National Park is home to Africa’s Big 5 as well as plenty of other African animal species. Our vehicle gives us a height advantage to take better photographs of the incredible area. We will have several game drives to get the chance to spot as much wildlife as possible. The following day offers an optional evening game drive.

We begin the morning with  a nature walk and visiting a craft market before crossing the border into South Africa again today and continue to travel to the Greater Kruger National Park for two memorable days of game driving. The Greater Kruger National Park is home to Africa’s Big 5 as well as plenty of other African animal species. Our vehicle gives us a height advantage to take better pictures of the incredible area. We will have several game drives to get the chance to spot different animal wildlife. The evening of the next day is free to take an optional game drive.

Day 19

Greater Kruger Area, South Africa

We will make the most of our day game driving through the Park. Today you have the opportunity of experience Kruger in an optional open 4×4 safari vehicle. Enjoy an optional sunset drive this afternoon. For those not participating in the 4×4 game drive, you enjoy a game drive through the park in a truck with your guide.

Day 20

Panorama Route – Johannesburg, South Africa

Our final day will be spent driving along the scenic Panorama Route, stopping for incredible views of Blyde River Canyon, God’s Window and Bourke’s Luck Potholes. The tour will finish once we reach Johannesburg, although most will enjoy an optional dinner out on our last night together.
