24 Day Zanzibar, Wildlife and Gorillas Overland Tour Itinerary

Day 1

Nairobi – Masai Mara, Kenya

Departing from the bustling Nairobi, we climb the escarpment to our first destination, a viewpoint that overlooks a portion of the remarkable Great Rift Valley. We then descend into the Rift Valley, entering the Masai territory where these farmers are frequently seen tending to their livestock on the roadsides. Passing through the town of Norak, we continue our travels, possibly catching a glimpse of some gorgeous wildlife along the way. We arrive at our campsite in the late afternoon. Acacia Camp overlooks the Meguarra hills as well as the stream that creates a natural border to the Masai Mara National Reserve.

Meals Included:Lunch, Dinner

Day 2

Masai Mara, Kenya

We leave briefly after the sun rises and embark on a game drive into the Masai Mara Reserve. This reserve is famous for being one of East Africa’s top National Reserves and is home to a broad selection of wildlife species. It is perhaps most well-known for hosting the magnificent Annual Migration, consisting of massive herds of over one million, including wildebeest, zebra, and Thomson’s gazelle that all cross over from the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. The Masai Mara is most visited between the months of July and October, when these impressive herds feast on the luscious, fresh grazing available in the reserve. Africa’s predators are usually close behind these herbivores and are frequently seen at a kill during this time of year. We game drive some more through a portion of the park, searching for the Big 5 as well as many other species of wildlife who make this reserve their home.

Following our day of game spotting, we have the opportunity to pay a visit to one of the close by Masai Manyattas. These are family compounds where the Masai live in their traditional ways. During the night, we gather around an open campfire and marvel at the magnificent sunset provided to us by the glorious skies of Africa.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Included Activity: Masai Mara National Reserve

Masai Mara

Day 3

Masai Mara – Eldoret, Kenya

Departing early from the Masai Mara, we make our way out of Masai land, passing through the picturesque tea plantations of Kericho before we descend the Rift Valley Plateau and arrive at Eldoret.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4

Eldoret– Kampala, Uganda

Today is the day we cross the Ugandan border where we spend the night in the capital city of Kampala. A small country, Uganda is abundant with stunning scenery. The landscapes of Uganda vary, from the luscious green regions around the northern shores of Lake Victoria to the snowy Ruwenzori Mountains in the west as well as the desert-like area in the north. The past unstable politics of Uganda have had a surprisingly positive effect in the country, leaving it free of the commercialism that has taken over so many other areas of Africa. President Museveni’s administration has devoted a large amount of effort and funds in order to restore Uganda to its former glory and status as one of the continent’s most flourishing, and from a tourist’s perspective, one of the most attractive and intriguing countries to visit.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 5 - 8

Kampala – Lake Bunyonyi (optional Gorilla Trekking), Uganda

We leave Kampala in the early hours of the morning and head west to our base at the serene Lake Bunyonyi in Uganda. Lake Bunyonyi is the deepest Crater Lake in Africa and is abundant with various exquisite birds. It is also the starting point of the optional Gorilla trek. Depending on where permits for trekking are currently being offered, we adventure out into the Magahinga or Bwindi National Parks in Uganda, the Virunga National Park in the DRC, or the Ruhengeri National Park in Rwanda. The costs per permit are constantly being altered and may be adjusted without notice.

Please Note:

At present, prices are set at US $600 (subject to change). A local transport and handling fee of about US $120 per person is also charged (this fee covers the return public transfer as well as the booking cost of the Wildlife Authority). For tours in the DRC or Rwanda, an additional cost is charged for your visa that will allow you entrance to either country as well as for visa renewal upon re-entering Uganda. It is recommended that you bring along a bit of extra cash for tipping the local guides and rangers. Please be sure to budget well, as permit payments must be made in US$ cash during the pre-departure meeting.

Trekking Procedures:

There are only approximately 700 remaining mountain gorilla (Gorilla beringei), the species that are known as our closest living relatives. Paying a visit to these placid creatures is an incredibly unique experience that will not be soon forgotten. The gorillas are monitored by park rangers on a day-to-day basis, but their whereabouts is not always known due to them being free roaming animals, therefore a sighting is not always 100% guaranteed. Due to the massive amount of DNA that we share with these beautiful giants, anyone showing signs of a cold or transferable illness will not be allowed to join the trek. Keep in mind that trekking is only available to those over 16 years of age.

The restrictions on the daily amount of visitors trekking to see these amazing animals means that we will be departing on our excursions from our base at Bunyonyi in small groups over three to four days, depending on the size of our group. On the way to the National Park, we snake our way through some of the most stunning scenery in Africa and, depending on where permits are available, we might spend an evening in either Kisoro or Rwanda. The next morning, after packing a tasty lunch to bring along, we transfer to the ranger’s station where we begin our journey to the gorillas. We will be led by our rangers through farming lands, then into thick rain forests and finally, to a family of gorgeous gorillas. This adventure can take from 45 minutes to 8 hours (excluding transfer time) and it can at times be rather exhausting and physically demanding, therefore a reasonable level of fitness will be required. In order to make sure that the gorillas do not get too accustomed to being visited by humans as well as to ensure that no illnesses are caught from us (due to the amount of our shared DNA), the maximum time we are allowed to spend with them is one hour. This will give you more than enough time to observe their incredible lifestyle and makes for a spectacular photographic opportunity. The rangers with whom we trek will happily provide you with the background of the gorilla family you visit, giving you a better insight into their lives in the wild. When your time with the gorillas comes to an end, you will hike your way out of the rain forest and head to your meeting point where you will be taken back to our campsite at Lake Bunyonyi.

During your trek, do not let yourself feel as though you are exploiting these magnificent creatures as the countless number of tourists that make their way to see the gorillas every day plays a crucial role in the animals’ survival. For decades, gorillas have been mercilessly hunted for their hands and heads which are sold as ashtrays and lampshades. In addition to this, an enormous amount of gorillas have died whilst attempting to stop poachers taking their babies in order to sell them to zoos where they hardly ever live for very long. Every bit of the amount you pay for your permit cost to see these remarkable creatures is utilized by park authorities to pay for gorilla protection patrols that aid in preventing poachers from reaching these animals.

Depending on where your trek takes place, you might pass through some of the local villages situated in this area due to the large number of refugees escaping from the Rwandan Genocide or from the constant turmoil in the DRC. The inhabitants of these villages are mostly subsistence farmers and families who farm on the hills of the volcanoes. To witness how these residents have ploughed, planted and harvested their crops in such unusual terrain and settings is quite an extraordinary sight.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

GORILLA TREKKING IS OPTIONAL
Please note that the transfer fee is not included in the trekking price

Gorillas (Lake Bunyonyi)

Day 9

Lake Bunyonyi – Kampala, Uganda

Once we are done admiring the encounters we have experienced with the gorillas and finished delighting in the tranquillity offered to us by the beautiful Lake Bunyonyi, we commence our travels back to Kampala. Tonight we camp in Kampala, giving us the chance to head out and experience the city’s nightlife scene.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 10

Kampala – Jinja, Uganda

Today gives us a choice to visit the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary or to head to Jinja for a variety of adventurous activities, including white water rafting in the White Nile, quad biking or visiting a volunteering community project. Our afternoon is devoted to time spent unwinding on the riverbanks or spotting the wide selection of beautiful water birds that frequent this area.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 11

Jinja – Nakuru, Kenya

We leave in the morning and make our way back to Kenya, stopping on the way to gather supplies and to enjoy a delicious lunch. We spend the night outside of Nakuru at a charming campsite situated on a local farm. Kenya’s fourth biggest town and the capital of the Rift Valley Province, Nakuru lies adjacent to the relatively small Lake Nakuru National Park that is surprisingly abundant in wildlife. EAMO Orphanage.

Day 12

Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya

In the morning, we start exploring the stunning Lake Nakuru National Park, renowned for the countless flamingos that are attracted to the edges of this soda lake. The actual numbers of these birds varies depending on the water level that, when low, almost transforms the lake into a haze of pink. The park was initially established as a sanctuary for black and white rhino, which are often spotted here. Our day is spend seeking out these gorgeous creatures as well as the elusive leopard, whilst on the way coming into contact with buffalo, giraffe, numerous antelope and the occasional hippopotamus.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Included Activity: Game drives through Lake Nakuru National Park in the overland vehicle

Our day is spent partaking in Optional Excursions such as an outing to Elsamere (former home to George and Joy Adamson of the Born Free Foundation), a boat trip to the Crescent Island Game Sanctuary or just a bicycle ride around Hell’s Gate National Park.

Day 14

Lake Naivasha – Nairobi, Kenya

Following a scrumptious breakfast, we make our way back to Nairobi, where we usually arrive in the early afternoon. Upon our arrival at Acacia Camp, we swap contact details, say our goodbyes and part ways from the people with whom we have just shared an incredible life-changing experience. We have the remainder of the day to take part in some of the various options offered to us in this lively city. Visit the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust where you can watch the orphaned baby elephants during feeding time, head to the Giraffe Centre in Langata, embark on another day trip of game viewing or, if you haven’t quite completed your souvenir collection, hope on a Matutu to one of the local curio markets nearby the campsite. Tonight you are also encouraged to try out the famous Carnivores restaurant.

Meals Included: Breakfast

Day 15

Nairobi – Arusha , Tanzania

Today we collect the passengers who will be joining us for the remainder of our journey. We leave Nairobi, travelling south and crossing the border into Tanzania at Namanga. We reside in a charming campsite tonight in Meserani, located on the outskirts of Arusha, before we make our way to our Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater adventure the following morning.

Meals Included: Lunch, Dinner

Day 16 - 18

Arusha – Karatu – Ngorongoro Crater & Serengeti Excursion (Optional) – Arusha, Tanzania

PLEASE NOTE: This activity includes 2 days/ 1 night in the National Park. The 1st night is spent outside the park in Karatu.

We start the day by visiting the Meserani Snake Park and Masai Cultural Museum. Make time to explore the lovely town of Arusha. Just a few minutes walk away from the campsite you will find a gallery selling paintings with a charming African feel to it. After a delicious lunch you are met by a local Tanzanian operator who leads the trips into the Parks in four wheel drive vehicles that have been modified for safari use. These vehicles allow for fantastic photo opportunities.

Departing from the campsite we make our way through the Masai town of Mtu Wa Mbu (‘Mosquito River’, situated next to the Lake Manyara National Park), and up the Rift Valley Escarpment to the village of Karatu. Karatu boasts incredible views of the surrounding hills and has numerous wheat farms that only add more beauty to this magnificent scenery. Our evening is spent at a lovely campsite in Karatu.

On the morning of the 2nd day, we leave in the early hours to enter the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and make our way into the Ngorongoro Crater that is abundant with wildlife, offering some of the best game viewing in the African continent, including the elusive Black Rhino.

Following our Crater game drive, we travel down the Crater’s rim and pass the Cradle of Mankind before reaching the Serengeti National Park. Game driving through the southern and central regions of the Park, we cross seemingly infinite landscapes that offer only natural beauty. We bush camp (no ablution facilities) tonight amongst the cool breezes and tranquil sounds of the African wilderness.

As soon as dawn breaks on the third day, we embark on yet another game drive, this time to explore the plains, searching for more majestic wildlife. If we’re fortunate enough, we might be able to see several (possibly even all) of Africa’s Big 5, including lion, rhino, buffalo, elephant and leopard. Following this, we return to the bountiful Crater rim and board our truck to return to Arusha where our night is spent swapping stories and laughter over our exhilarating experience with the wilderness.

Meals Included:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Optional Activity: Serengeti & Ngorongoro Excursion (Please speak to your crew for more information)

Please note: For the travellers who are sitting this one out, their next days will be spent at leisure, delighting in their surrounds – the Meserani reptile Park, the Masai Cultural Museum and the neighbouring villages and craft markets. If you wish to do something else, you are always free to explore the nearby town of Arusha.

Ngorongoro Crater

Day 19

Arusha – Pangani, Tanzania

Before continuing onwards to Dar es Salaam, we stop at Arusha in the morning in order to replenish our supplies. On today’s drive we journey through the town of Moshi, located at the base of the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro – Africa’s highest mountain. Moshi acts as the starting point for all expeditions up Mount Kilimanjaro and, depending on weather conditions, we might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the mountain’s snow-capped peak that makes for an incredible photographic opportunity. We pass through massive sisal plantations by The Usambara and Pare Mountain ranges before finally arriving at our beautiful campsite that is situated between these mountains, midway between Arusha and Dar es Salaam.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Please Note: Some trips may choose to forego this stop/night and push on to the next stop (at their own cost).

Day 20

Pangani – Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

We make our way to Dar es Salaam today, journeying through picturesque landscapes and gorgeous palm trees, nearing the inviting Indian Ocean. Our driving time today is extended due to the high amount of traffic that is city-bound, but the sights and sounds of the bustling Dar suburbs will most certainly entertain you. Make a point to keep a lookout for the shop-fronts boasting funny catch phrases that are fantastic photographic attractions for most tourists. Upon our arrival in Dar es Salaam, we head out to our seaside campsite in order to prepare for our expedition to Zanzibar that following morning.

Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 21

Dar es Salaam – Zanzibar (Optional)

We are taken to the ‘Spice Island’ via a ferry that departs from Dar es Salaam. Here, we have the option to spend the next three evenings. Zanzibar is rich in history and was one of the foremost starting points for the majority of East African explorers in their pursuit of new land. New fellow travellers may join us here, replacing those who will be leaving us at the end of our Zanzibar expedition.

Please note: Accommodation and meals are for your own account during our Zanzibar trip, as it is our experience that passengers prefer to explore the island on their own and in accordance with their own budgets. The trip leader will join you and it is through them that you can organise your lodging, whilst meals can be purchased from a broad variety of restaurants. There will also be a wide selection of Optional Excursions on offer.

For travellers not wishing to visit the island of Zanzibar, the next three days will be spent at leisure at the beach campsite in Dar es Salaam. Here, there will be a variety of Optional Excursions available from the camp, including diving, snorkelling and fishing trips.

Meals Included: Breakfast

Included Activity: Zanzibar Ferry

Zanzibar

Day 22 - 23

Zanzibar Island

Apart from its intriguing history, Zanzibar has plenty of enthralling experiences to offer visitors. Zanzibar is well-known for its tasty spices , and a trip around one of the spice plantations always proves to be an extremely interesting experience. Other Optional Excursions include an outing to the incredible beaches and gigantic tortoises of Prison Island, a full day scuba dive that takes place in Nungwe or even a fishing trip in a traditional dhow. You can always hire a moped to get yourself around the island, perhaps to one of the brilliant seafood restaurants where you can indulge in a sumptuous and very reasonably-priced meal. In fact, Zanzibar is a seafood lover’s heaven, with only the freshest seafood being caught daily – crayfish being a rather well-liked specialty. If you prefer to hang back, feel free to socialise with the interesting and friendly locals during dinner.

No Meals Included

Accommodation and Meals are for your own account whilst on Zanzibar, as it is our experience that passengers prefer to explore the island on their own.

The Trip Leader joins you and can arrange your accommodation, while meals can be enjoyed from a wide selection of restaurants.

For those not opting to visit the island of Zanzibar, the next 3 days are spent at leisure at the beach campsite in Dar es Salaam. There are various optional excursions available from the camp including diving, snorkelling and fishing trips. The driver and cook remain behind in Dar es Salaam during the excursion.
