Kenya Tours & Budget Overland Safari Packages

Think of massive herds of migrating wildebeest, adorned tribesmen and women from the Masai Mara tribe and pink flamingo-covered shores, and you have a true African safari experience. Named after Mount Kenya, the second highest mountain in Africa. While on a Kenya Tour you will be spoilt with vast and varied amount of wildlife. Namely, the endangered black rhino, eland, wildebeest, cape buffalo, elephant, giraffe, hippo, lion, leopard and cheetah, to name but a few. Kenya also has many expansive lakes, such as Lake Naivasha that is a haven for birdlife. Here you will find pelican, herons and cormorants, amongst others. An amazing bird to witness in flight is the African Fish Eagle, with its majestic hunter’s call.

Why go to Kenya?

  • * Safaris in the Masai Mara
  • * Hot air ballooning
  • * Local craft markets
  • * Feeding giraffes in Nairobi
  • * Flamingos in Lake Nakuru
  • * Getting involved in local community projects
  • * Wildebeest Migration
  • * Safaris in National Parks
  • * Birdwatching at the Great Rift Valley
  • * Learning the culture of the colourful Masai Mara Tribe
  • * White sandy beaches and isolated islands
  • * Amazing underwater activities
  • * Discovering interesting facts about ‘The cradle of Mankind’

Then there are the people – colourful, cultural and friendly. With their original tribesmen and women outfits, witnessing one of their tribal dances is a highlight on a Kenya Safari. The Masai Mara are a Nilotic ethnic group with a semi-nomadic lifestyle. Expect chant lullabies and humming songs which culminates in a polyhonic syncopated rhythm. See them jumping several metres into the air while they perform the adumu/aigus’ dance and why not try it out yourself!

Wildlife highlights

The top wildlife highlight of Kenya is undoubtedly the Great Migration, or Wildebeest Migration, where every year millions of wildebeest and zebra migrate between Kenya’s Masai Mara and the Serengeti in bordering Tanzania. The spectacle of seeing vast herds of animals on the move through huge plains (pursued by prides of lions who occasionally go in for kills) is one of the great wildlife experiences on the planet.

The best time to visit the Masai Mara for the Wildebeest Migration is July and August and then again at the end of November, but if you aren’t in Kenya at these times of the year then there are plenty more wildlife highlights to experience. The Masai Mara, Kenya’s flagship park, is famed for its big cat sightings particularly lion and cheetah, as well as many other species in the classic East African safari landscapes of lush grasslands and open plains dotted with umbrella acacia trees.

Amboseli National Park is famous for its massive herds of big-tusked elephants, which can be seen against a dramatic backdrop of Africa’s tallest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, just over the border in Tanzania. Lake Nakuru National Park is best for seeing black and white rhino, the rare Rothschild’s giraffe and thousands of pink flamingoes on the lake. One of Kenya’s biggest parks, Tsavo East National Park is home to huge herds of dusty elephants as well as some unusual antelope species, such as the fringe-eared oryx, lesser kudu and the long-necked gerenuk.

The arid Samburu National Reserve has some animals you don’t find in many places in Kenya, such as the gerenuk, Beisa oryx and reticulated giraffe, while the little-visited Shimba Hills National Reserve, which lies close to Kenya’s coast, is home to the country’s only population of sable antelope.

You don’t even have to go very far after you land in Kenya’s capital city of Nairobi before you can see wildlife. There’s a game reserve, Nairobi National Park just a few kilometres outside of the city, where you can spot leopard, lion, rhino, cheetah, eland and giraffe. If you want a wildlife experience right in your hotel before you head off on safari, then book into the Giraffe Manor in Nairobi, where the herd of resident Rothschild giraffe poke their long necks into the dining room while you eat breakfast.

Under Kenya’s warm ocean there are underwater worlds of animals to discover on snorkelling and diving trips. Five marine parks and reserves along the coast (including Africa’s oldest marine park – Malindi Marine National Park) protect a number of marine species, from turtles (including the endangered Olive Ridley turtles in Watamu Marine National Park) and dolphins to shoals of tropical fish, sharks and manta rays.

Why go on a Kenya Overland Safari?

Kenya is located in the wildlife-rich East Africa. The warm Indian Ocean runs along the country and offers beautiful beaches and sun-bathing opportunities. The landscape is one of savannah, lakelands, mountain highlands, the Great Rift Valley making this home to a plethora of wild animals such as lions, elephants and rhinos. There are many National Parks and reserves perfect for day and night safaris.

The Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park is home to hundreds of elephants, as well as buffaloes, hippos and a variety of birdlife, such as the pelican and egyptian geese. The ecosystem is mainly savannah with a few swamp areas which you can get a clear picture of from Observation Hill. One can also take in amazing views of Mount Kilimanjaro.

The Masai Mara National Reserve

Established in 1961, the Masai Mara National Reserve is situated in an enormous game park in Narok County, Kenya, and is joined to the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. The reserve was named in honour of the Masai folk, who were the original occupants of the region. Translated from the Masai word ‘Maa’ meaning ‘spotted’, the Masai Mara was also named due to how the area looks from a distance, with circles of trees, thickets, savannahs and cloud shadows that seem to dot the park. The reserve is renowned as one of the greatest and most popular wildlife parks in all of Africa, and is famous the world over for its incredible abundance of the big cats: lion, leopard and cheetah, as well as its annual migration during which masses of zebra, Thomson’s gazelle and 1.5 million wildebeest make their way to and from the Serengeti while crossing through the crocodile infested Mara river.

The Great Migration

One of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World, the Great Migration is an annual movement of millions of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle across the plains of the Masai Mara National Park to the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania over the crocodile-infested Mara River. The animals migrate in search of fresh grass after seasonal rains, moving in herds of thousands, with the occasional kill by a pride of lions making for the kind of scene you usually only see in nature documentaries.

The perfect destination for safari first-timers

If you’re travelling to Africa for your first safari, Kenya is one of the best countries to pick. It’s easy to travel there from the northern hemisphere, the Big Five game viewing is superb, the tourist infrastructure is well developed and there’s a wide range of accommodation options to suit all budgets.

The big cats of Masai Mara National Reserve

One of Africa’s most famous game parks, the Masai Mara is deserving of its international reputation, with is spectacular landscapes of undulating grasslands punctuated with acacia trees and its abundant, diverse wildlife. The reserve is famous for its big cats, especially its large population of lions, which safari goers are often lucky enough to see hunting their antelope prey.

The elephants of Amboseli National Park

Named one of the best places in the world to get close to free-ranging elephants, Amboseli offers guaranteed spectacular sightings of its more than 1400 big-tusked elephants against a stunning backdrop of the snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. Kenya’s second most popular park also has many other species (including buffalo, lion, impala, cheetah and spotted hyena) which are easily spotted in the long dry months when vegetation is sparse.

Scaling Mount Kenya

While not as famous as Mount Kilimanjaro, its neighbouring peak across the border in Tanzania, Mount Kenya offers a stellar climbing experience for travellers in search of adventure in Kenya. It’s Africa’s second tallest mountain, at nearly 5000 metres high, and is considered a more challenging climb than Mount Kilimanjaro. If you’re up for the adventure, the journey up to the summit offers dazzling panoramas over the plains as well as the chance to spot wildlife such as elephant, black rhino, buffalo and colobus monkeys.

Beach time in coastal paradise

Kenya is a great destination if you want to combine safari with some beach time. The coast of Kenya is blessed with some spectacular soft white sand beaches fringed by warm turquoise ocean. You can either chill out on a beach lounger for days, or go for a more active beach holiday, picking from a number of watersports on offer such as windsurfing, kitesurfing, diving and snorkelling with turtles, sharks, dolphins and shoals of tropical fish, and sailing on romantic dhows (traditional centuries-old sail boats).

Birdwatching at the Great Rift Valley lakes

With more than 1000 bird species, Kenya is a birdwatcher’s paradise, especially in the Great Rift Valley, where a succession of lakes and wetlands is home to one of the most diverse bird populations in the world. Millions of candyfloss-pink flamingos feed on the algae in Lake Nakuru and Lake Bogoria, where you can also see eagles, pelicans, cormorants and goliath herons and more than 350 other species, while the elevated freshwater Lake Naivasha attracts black herons, kingfishers and great white egrets.

Taking time out on Lamu Island

Lamu Island is only a short flight away from Nairobi, but it feels like you step back in time a few centuries. The tiny car-free island (only donkeys and traditional dhow boats are used for transportation) moves to a slow rhythm that feels like a different era. Lamu Town, Africa’s best-preserved Swahili settlement and Kenya’s oldest town, oozes history and charm, with its centuries-old beautiful buildings, atmospheric narrow alleyways, lovely cafés and vibrant market. On the other side of the island, Shela Beach is an idyllic stretch of golden sand beach with just a handful of hotels and guesthouses and a few restaurants, where you can live out simple beach days punctuated with snorkelling trips and sunset dhow rides.

Cycling in the wild in Hell’s Gate National Park

Want a different wildlife experience to the usual safari by game drive? Hell’s Gate National Park is the only game reserve in Kenya where you can view wildlife by bicycle. Cycling is the best way to take in the natural splendour of the park, with its dramatic gorges, towering cliffs and billowing plumes of geothermal steam, as well as its wildlife: zebra, giraffe, eland, Thomson’s gazelle, hartebeest and baboons.

Experience rich and diverse cultures

Kenya is home to a diverse array of cultural groups, such as the Masai, Turkana, El Molo, Rendille, Swahili, Pokot and Samburu, each with their own distinctive histories, customs and traditions. There are countless cultural experiences on offer to travellers who want to find out more about Kenya’s people, whether it’s learning how to make jewellery with Samburu women, going on a walk in the bush with a Masai wildlife guide, cooking a meal with a Swahili family, or attending a traditional Turkana wedding.

Lake Nakuru

Lake Nakuru is where you’ll see those thousands of pink flamingos, gathered together to feed on Lake Nakuru’s algae. This pink spectacle moves back and forth as they feed, and, occasionally and spectacularly, take to flight, creating a rosy drama African legends are made of.

Lake Naivasha

Lake Naivasha and its surrounds has fertile soils and plenty of water supply, making this area one of Kenya’s prime agricultural regions. Many forests surround this lake, drawing an astounding amount of birdlife. In fact, Lake Naivasha is known as a world-class birding destination. Keeping the birds company, are giraffe, buffalo, Colobus monkeys, hippos, zebras and many other game. Take a boat trip out on the lake, and try and spot an African Fish Eagle scoop itself a bite to eat.

Best times to go on a Kenya Tour:

Jul-Aug: During this time the migration crosses the Mara River where the animals stay in the Masai Mara until November (short rain season) before heading south back into the Serengeti.

Jan–Feb: Most people find the hot, dry weather during this time the most pleasant in comparison to the rest of the year’s weather. This is also the best time for bird watching, as birds in huge numbers flock to the lakes. Lake Nakuru is a hit with the flamingos.

This often depends on what you want to see and how the temperatures can vary in Kenya. The great thing about the weather though is that the sun is always peeking out.

For safaris whether you go in Winter or Summer, the early morning game drives are cold and as you climb from sea level you can expect a drop in temperature. It makes sense that you would want to go during the dry season (see above) because if you are outdoors, you will get wet and your shoes muddy.

Of course many of you will want to witness the Wildebeest Migration where thousands of herds form a black mass of colour as they return from the Serengeti. To witness this then go between mid-August and late October.

For beach lovers the Indian Ocean is warm all year round, but rain can fall at any time, but soon the sun comes out and dries up the earth. It might be best to avoid the coast between mid-March to late May when the temperatures can be extremely high, and there is a lot of rainfall.

Weather in Kenya

Kenya has a tropical climate due to the fact that it lies on the equator. The weather is very variable, influenced by the altitude and other climatic factors. The average daytime temperatures are between 20°C and 28°C, but you will find the coast to be warmer affected by the strong monsoon winds. The dry season is from June to October with the wet seasonbeing from November to May.

More about the dry season:

These are generally the coldest months where temperatures vary quite significantly from region to region. The sky during the days are clear with the sun peeking out, but the early morning temperatures can be low at about 10°C. These can make the early morning safaris chilly, so pack for these cold conditions. There is very little rain and humidity is low so driving out on safaris can be pleasant.

More about the wet season:

Here you will find the temperatures to be between 24°C and 27°C. Lower altitudes are more consistent at 30°C. Early morning game drives are once again quite chilly, so layering is advisable. The humidity from December to April is very high.
