Tour Overview

Departing from Kampala
Ends in
Jinja

You will be guided through The Best of Uganda, also known as the ‘Pearl of Africa’. This expedition includes highlights such as hiking in forests to spot wild gorillas and chimpanzees, as well as exploring waterways, fascinating villages, and the lesser-known sights of tree-climbing lions, massive pods of hippo and an endless range of different animals. This tour explores the picturesque Uganda, its people and its fauna. We will cover over 2000 kilometres during this trip, some of it on difficult dirt roads. The conditions of weather, roads and more will affect our decisions on tour routes and this journey might be run in reverse if necessary. Therefore, a reasonable amount of flexibility by travellers is required. The tour requires participation from all group members. This entails assisting with the food preparation, washing of dishes, keeping the truck clean and the setting up the camp. Please keep in mind that flexibility and an open mind is needed on the trip.  The guide is registered with the Field Guide Association of Southern Africa (FGASA). The tour has been designed to include all highlights in the price and thus avoid any hidden surprises. The camping tour provides all equipment, including camp stretcher beds, tents, camp chairs. Travellers can bring supplementary mattress if desired. Travellers are required to bring sleeping bags, towels and travel pillows.

Itinerary

Day 1: Kampala – Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda

Leaving Lakes Heights Hotel (13 Church Road, Entebbe) at 8am. During our travels, we will pay a visit to the drum market, a fruit market, and we will also make a stop at the Equator. In the afternoon we make our way into the Lake Mburo National Park, famous for its massive hippo concentrations. We spend our night camping on the shores of the Lake.

Meals: Dinner

Distance: 247 Km

Highlights: Equator

Day 2: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda

We begin our day with a game drive, after which we will leave the Park to journey through a landscape of undulating hills peppered with banana plantations and herds of magnificent long-horned Ankole cattle. In the afternoon we journey on rough mountain terrain and pass isolated villages, frequently hidden by mist, toward the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. This evening’s camp is situated at the forest’s edge.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Distance: 200 Km

Highlights: Morning Game Drive and Scenic Drive

Days 3-4: Bwindi Gorilla Trek, Uganda

On one of these days we will participate in what is the by far the most memorable ‘wow factor’ of this tour – Gorilla Trekking. We divide into small groups and hike up into the lush forest, led by local guides, to track and spend some time with a whole family of scarce wild Mountain Gorillas. Because the Gorilla permits are limited, we will spend two days here in order to give everyone a chance to take part. If permits are on offer on Day 4, we will pay a visit to Lake Bunyonyi on Day 3. When not hiking to see the gorillas, we embark on leisurely village walks and spend some time seeking out the incredible birds that have made the forest fringe their home.

Meals: Breakfast X2, Lunch X2, Dinner X2

Distance: 59 Km

Highlights: Gorilla Trek, Beautiful Drive

Days 5-6: Queen Elizabeth National Park – Ishasha, Uganda

lions in Queen Elizabeth NP

Departing from the mountains and lush forestry, we head down to the grasslands of the magnificent Queen Elizabeth National Park. We spend two evenings camping here in an isolated campsite. Besides the plentiful species of mammals, reptiles and birds, Ishasha is famous for its massive tree-climbing lions. We will embark on lengthy game drives in order to seek out the high fig trees where we might spot these lions, as well as the vast savannah for other animals.

Meals: Breakfast X2, Lunch X2, Dinner X2

Distance: 143km and 40Km

Highlights: Extensive Game Experience

Day 7: Queen Elizabeth National Park – Rwenzori Mountains, Uganda

We pack up our gear in the morning and journey across the Park and through the Maramagambo Forest, where we make our way to Rwenzori or the ‘Mountains of the Moon’. Our camp will be set up in the local community centre where we can mingle with the locals and go for a walk around the villages, then into the forest. The slopes rise up to 5000 metres above sea level and are often capped in snow making for an unusual sight considering it is so close to the equator.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Distance: 94 Km

Highlights: Kasinga Channel

Day 8: Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda

After an early morning start we leave the mountains behind us and descend into the panoramic tea plantations that surround Fort Portal. Prepare for a rough journey today in our vehicle as we take a long drive to Kaniyo-Pabidi camp in Murchison Falls National Park. We can enjoy a few comfortable amenities here.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Distance: 150 Km

Highlights: Ruwenzori Walk

Days 9-10: Murchison Falls/Victoria Nile, Uganda

Look forward to a fun day today as we get to meet a troupe of chimpanzees who are habituated and amusing to meet and watch. We will spend about an hour with the group before heading back to camp. Our next activity today is to explore Murchison Falls where the Nile River narrows and falls into the Rift Valley. After spending some time here we will travel downstream and cross the Nile for a game drive. We will be camping in a large game viewing area for both nights.

Meals: Breakfast x2, Lunch x2, Dinner x2

Distance: 300 km and 55 km

Highlights: Murchinson Falls National Park, Chimpanzee Trek, Murchinson Falls

Day 11: Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, Uganda

An early morning start allows us to take a leisurely cruise along the Nile River. We will hopefully be able to spot the rare Shoebill stork, amongst other animals. (If we are unable to travel by boat we will use the safari vehicle.) Once back at our vehicle we will leave the park and go to the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. This was established to reintroduce Rhino back into their original habitat. We will be camping tonight.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Distance: 204 Km

Day 12: Jinja, Uganda

Today you have the option of tracking Rhino on foot as an optional activity. We will pack up camp for the last time and make our way to Jinja for a relatively comfortable stay at Adrift Camp. An own expense dinner can be enjoyed with your fellow travellers.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Distance: 226 Km

Optional: Rhino Trek on Foot

Day 13: Jinja, Uganda

The tour ends in the morning after we enjoy our last breakfast together. However, the Nile River offers some of the most thrilling one-day white water rafting adventures in the world. From the campsite, you will also be able to spend a day helping out at a local community project. We encourage you to partake part in these activities even though they will be at your own expense. However, you are more than welcome to unwind at the ‘Source of the Nile’and book an additional evening at the camp.

The truck transfer departs Jinja at 1400 to head back to Entebbe arriving around 1800 at the Lake Height Hotel, Entebbe.
