Zambia Adventure Tours, Packages and Budget Safaris

Zambia is located in Southern Africa and landlocked by Congo, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and Angola. Lusaka, the capital city, is situated in the south-central part of the country. English is the official language while Nyanja is used by locals. Zambia gives access to Victoria Falls and incredible nature and wildlife in its national parks. Livingstone is the Zambian gateway to the magnificent Victoria Falls also known as Mosi-oa-Tunya or ‘the smoke that thunders’. This famous world heritage site is the largest sheet of falling water in the world. In the centre of Livingstone and surrounding areas there are several museums and hand craft markets to visit. Or, spend the day enjoying various adventure activities on offer including; white water rafting, canoeing and bungee jumping. South Luangwa National Park offers an untouched, exclusive wildlife experience. This National Park has a healthy leopard population and a variety of game concentrated on the banks of the Luangwa River, perfect for an Africa safari tour. It offers a rustic wilderness vacation. In the west of Zambia is Kafue National Park and has the largest diversity of animal wildlife of all African national parks. The Zambian flooded grasslands eco-region, support large herds of herbivores, which keep close to the swamps and marsh regions in the dry months (June to October).

Wildlife highlights

Landlocked Zambia is one of Africa’s best safari destinations, with a wealth of vast parks and reserves packed with game without the safari traffic jams of other southern and east African reserves.

South Luangwa National Park is Zambia’s flagship park, and it’s a perfect place to start if you’re a first time safari goer, with its dense concentrations of animals, such as big elephant and buffalo herds, and common leopard and lion sightings in an incredibly beautiful landscape of woodland, grassland savannah and riverine forest. While you can do safaris here on game drives, a highlight is doing walking safaris – this is one of the best parks in Africa in which to explore the bush on foot.

At over 22 000 square kilometres – nearly the same size as Belgium – Kafue National Park is the largest park in Zambia and the second largest in the world. It’s often overlooked by visitors due to its remoteness, which means that this wilderness is for the most part undeveloped: it remains raw, wild and totally breath taking. The park is known for its leopard sightings, and its huge diversity of antelope species, including the rare roan antelope and huge herds of red lechwe.

The Lower Zambezi National Park, which sits across the Zambezi River from Mana Pools in Zimbabwe, is home to abundant game, from elephants and buffalo to leopard and lion. A highlight here is going on a canoe safari on the river, which allows you to get a full immersion into the wilderness, and to see wildlife from a totally different vantage point.

As well as classic safari experiences, Zambia offers rare species and migrations to entice seasoned safari goers. In the largest mammal migration on the planet, 15 million fruit bats fly each year in November and December from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Zambia’s Kasanka National Park. While little known, this migration is a spectacle to behold, especially from a treetop hide. In the same park, sightings of the elusive semi-aquatic sitatunga antelope are common.

For a real off-the-beaten track adventure, the remote and undeveloped Liuwa Plain National Park is home to the second largest wildebeest migration in Africa with thousands of the antelopes gathering on the vast plains every November. While in the north east of the country, the community-owned Bangweulu wetlands is where you’ll find the world’s only population of black lechwe antelope.

10 reasons to travel to Zambia

South Luangwa National Park

One of Africa’s best parks for wildlife viewing, South Luangwa has animals in abundance in a jaw-dropping landscape of wide floodplains and groves of trees. Expect to see vast herds of buffalo, elephant, zebra, giraffe, lions, wild dogs and leopards (which are normally hard to see in other parks but are frequently spotted here at night) and amazing birdlife.

Victoria Falls

The planet’s largest waterfall, Victoria Falls is one of Africa’s greatest natural spectacles and a big draw for visitors to Zambia. Known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya (the smoke that thunders), Victoria Falls will quite literally take your breath away – and soak your clothes at the same time – as you stand at viewpoints along the cliff edge and watch one million litres of water roaring down the Zambezi gorge every second, sending up a mist that can be seen more than 50 kilometres away.

Adrenaline fun in Livingstone

Set on the Zambezi River near to Victoria Falls, Livingstone is known as Africa’s adrenaline capital, with a smorgasbord of heart pumping activities on offer to excite even the hardiest of adventure seekers. Take your pick from bungee jumping off a bridge over the river, a microlight flight over the falls, abseiling down a cliff, white water rafting on the Zambezi, swinging across a deep gorge, going crocodile cage diving and doing a wildlife safari on horseback.

Kafue National Park

The second largest park in the world, Kafue is little visited, which means you have pristine wilderness practically all to yourself. Wildlife density is lower than in Zambia’s other, better known parks, but if you’re patient, you could be rewarded with sightings of 20 different antelope (including big herds of red lechwe and puku), as well as lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dog in a spectacular variety of landscapes, from open grasslands to woodlands and massive granite hills.

Walking safaris

Walking safaris were pioneered in Zambia, and the country remains the best place to explore the bush on foot. Going walking is a totally different experience to driving through the bush: you get the chance to be really immersed in the natural environment, and notice things like smells, sounds and smaller animals that you miss when you’re in a car. You learn to track animals with your guide, and once you find them, there’s nothing that beats the thrill of being close to lions, elephant or giraffe on foot. The best reserve where you can do walking safari in Zambia is South Luangwa National Park, which has a number of specialist walking camps, but you can also do wonderful walking safaris in Lower Zambezi National Park and Kafue National Park.

Canoeing the Zambezi

Going on a canoeing safari along the Zambezi River is one of the best ways to take in Zambia’s magnificent wildlife and scenery. You can spend anything from a few hours to a week paddling down the river, with Zambia on one side and Zimbabwe on the other, getting up close to pods of hippos, crocodiles, herds of elephants coming for a swim, as well as buffalo, lion and hundreds of species of birds, spending your nights camping in the wild under a blanket of stars.

Wildebeest of Liuwa Plain National Park

In November each year tens of thousands of wildebeest, zebra and red lechwe move between the pans of remote and little visited Liuwa Plain National Park in search of grazing, followed by hyena, wild dog and cheetah. It’s the second biggest wildebeest migration in Africa – after the Serengeti and the Masai Mara – and an incredible wildlife experience without any crowds.

White water rafting on the Zambezi

The Zambezi River, Africa’s fourth largest, offers some of the best white water rafting on the continent. Nearly half the rapids on the Zambezi have been categorized as Grade Five, which is just about as challenging as you get! Be prepared for a wild (and wet) ride as you navigate the churning rapids on this fast-paced heart pumping adventure.

Lake Kariba

Cruise around the largest man-made lake in the world, Lake Kariba, on one of its many houseboats to experience water-based game viewing at a slow pace. After a trip in the bush, staying on a houseboat is the perfect relaxing antidote – relax on deck with a book as you spot hippos, crocodiles and elephants, buffalo, waterbuck and lion on the shore, or head out on a tender boat to do some fishing.

Bat migration

You probably know all about the famous wildebeest migration, which takes place annually in Kenya and Tanzania, but you probably don’t know anything about Zambia’s bat migration: the largest mammal migration in Africa. At the end of every year, 10 million fruit bats migrate to Kasanka National Park from the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo and proceed to eat their way through the fruits of the forest they nest in – quite a spectacle to behold and certainly an unusual safari experience.
