Day 1: Cape Town, South Africa

We are pleased to welcome you to Cape Town. The guide will assist you in completing the itinerary, booking optional activities, and serving as your point of contact over the next few days.

Day 2: Cape Town, South Africa

Take a stroll through the multicultural Bo-Kaap neighborhood to begin your day in vibrant Cape Town. Following this, you will enjoy a private tour of Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, named by National Geographic Travel as one of the world’s ten most magnificent gardens. Then, proceed to Cape Point lighthouse and Cape of Good Hope, the southernmost point of Africa, to see the resident population of African penguins.

Day 3: Cape Town , South Africa

Choose from a variety of optional activities during your leisure time in Cape Town. Enjoy spectacular views of the city and the Atlantic coastline from the summit of the mountain by taking a cable car. Explore the Cape Winelands, including Stellenbosch, the historic city, and wine estates as you tour them with expert guides and indulge in a variety of tastings and pairings.   

Cape Town has something for everyone. Take a walk on the V&A Waterfront, visit Table Mountain, or take a wine tasting tour around Stellenbosch. You can go abseiling if you’re adventurous. Explore the city’s old buildings and gardens, which include some of the oldest structures in South Africa. Among the museums and theatres in the city are the Cultural Historical Museum, Planetarium, and many others

Day 4: Cape Town – Johannesburg , South Africa

Take a guided tour of Soweto township after flying to Johannesburg. The anti-apartheid movement in South Africa was centered in Soweto, the home of its leader, Nelson Mandela. Learn about this painful chapter in the history of the country at the Mandela House Museum. With your fellow travelers, enjoy a traditional South African braai (barbecue).

Day 5: Johannesburg – Greater Kruger Area , South Africa

Take a scenic drive along the Panorama Route, one of the world’s most picturesque drives, towards Kruger National Park. From God’s Window viewpoint, you can see panoramic views of the forest-covered valley throughout the day. Stop at Blyde River Canyon and Bourke’s Luck Potholes.

Day 6: Kruger National Park, South Africa

Upon arriving in Kruger National Park, climb aboard an open jeep for a full-day safari of the park, which is home to an abundance of large mammals. Hop in a 4×4 safari vehicle and get yourself one step closer to the surrounding nature as we journey through this breathtaking wilderness of savanna and scrubland.This will provide us with the opportunity to see elephants, lions, giraffes, and perhaps even elusive leopards. We invite you to return to our lodge in the evening, where you can relax and listen to the sounds of the bush at night.  With an area of more than 19,000 square kilometers (7,500 square miles), South Africa’s Kruger National Park is one of the world’s largest and most impressive animal reserves. The Kruger National Park has more large mammal species than any other park on the continent, with 147 species.

Day 7: Greater Kruger Area – Karongwe Private Game Reserve , South Africa

Experience the pristine wildlife sanctuary of the Karongwe Private Game Reserve located in the Greater Kruger National Park. Learn about efforts to protect the region’s cheetahs and other carnivores with a researcher from the Endangered Wildlife Trust’s Cheetah Metapopulation Project. A wildlife-viewing excursion through the reserve is then conducted with the researcher. Over the next two days, you will enjoy ranger-led wildlife safari drives in an open safari vehicle at Karongwe Nature Reserve in search of Africa’s renowned Big Five. Our safari drives provide several opportunities for wildlife viewing within Karongwe Private Game Reserve, which consists of over 9,000 hectares (22,240 acres) of superior African bushveld. Accommodations are provided in various locations within the reserve (depending on availability). During your time here, you will either stay in lodge rooms or very comfortable permanent tents (both of equal quality and with similar amenities).

Day 8: Karongwe Private Game Reserve, South Africa

Enjoy a morning and afternoon safari with our local guides in Karongwe. Drive through the shrublands of the bushveld in search of Africa’s renowned “big five”. Take a stroll around the grounds or relax on the deck after returning to camp. Enjoy a morning wildlife safari drive by waking up early (around 5am) and drinking your morning coffee. After brunch, return to the lodge for some leisure time. We invite you to converse on the deck, walk the grounds and gardens, and enjoy high tea. After tea, we will take a safari drive in the late afternoon. As soon as we have seen a great deal of wildlife, it is time to return to camp and freshen up before dinner.

Day 9: Karongwe Private Game Reserve – Johannesburg, South Africa

This morning, embark on one final safari, keeping an eye out for Karongwe’s iconic inhabitants. In the evening, you will enjoy dinner in our family-run lodge before returning to the city. Take a safari 4×4 and keep your eyes open for wonderful wildlife encounters. In addition to qualified wildlife rangers and expert trackers, the safari drives are conducted by qualified wildlife rangers and local safari guides who are both highly experienced in the African bush.

Day 10: Johannesburg – Windhoek, South Africa

Day 11: Windhoek – Sesriem, Namibia

Drive from Namibia’s capital to Sesriem, the gateway to Namib-Naukluft National Park. Keep an eye out for the oryx, springbok, jackal, hyena, and more that call these arid lands home-red-hued desertscapes, stark camel thorn trees, and dramatic curved dunes. Relax poolside at our lodge, watching the desert sunset.

Sesriem and Sossusvlei offer postcard-perfect desert sunsets, vast landscapes of reds and orange, and dramatic dunes with curved ridges. In this area, you can also see oryx, springbok, jackal, ground squirrel, and hyena, among many other wildlife species.

Day 12: Sesriem, Namibia

Experience the thrill of exploring one of Africa’s largest national parks. Discover the massive dunes of Sossusvlei and the white clay pan of Deadvlei in the Namib desert, the oldest desert in the world. An orange dune backdrop and a crisp blue sky combine to make for dramatic photos of dead camel thorn trees. Next, visit Sesriem Canyon, a natural gorge carved by the Tsauchab River over millions of years.

Day 13: Sesriem – Swakopmund, Namibia

Follow the road through a changing desert landscape towards Swakopmund. Before heading into the countryside, look out for roaming zebra, kudu, springbok, and oryx, and stop for a break in Solitaire. On this 4×4 journey, we learn about the survival strategies of bushmen who lived thousands of years ago in this inhospitable region. We also search for smaller wildlife that has survived here, such as snakes, geckos, spiders, and an array of insects.

Day 14: Swakopmund, Namibia

Take advantage of a free morning in Swakopmund to experience the town’s unique Afro-German culture; or, explore the Namib desert by sandboarding. Tour Mondesa township this afternoon with a local guide and learn about its history and people. Get a taste of traditional foods at the local market, including wild spinach, mopane worms, and dried sardines. Explore a local arts and crafts shop, chat with the locals, and finish the day with dinner and a performance in a cozy, family-run restaurant. Visit curio shops, the museum and restaurants in this town with a unique mix of German and African cultures.

Day 15: Swakopmund – Damaraland, Namibia

Embark on your journey to Twyfelfontein — Namibia’s first UNESCO World Heritage site —to witness some of Africa’s largest petroglyph concentrations. Prehistoric hunters and gatherers carved these impressive engravings depicting rhinos, elephants, ostriches, and footprints of humans and animals. After that, we will continue to our lodge located in the heart of Damaraland. From the deck, take in a colourful sunset or swim in the pool.

Day 16: Damaraland – Etosha National Park, Namibia

Explore the rich sandstone treasures of Damaraland during a morning of relaxation at our lodge. Visit Etosha National Park in the afternoon, one of Namibia’s most spectacular wildlife sanctuaries. Get comfortable in our lodge, located outside the park.

Day 17: Etosha National Park , Namibia

Safari through Etosha National Park, where open grasslands meet a massive salt pan. As you explore Etosha in your open vehicle, keep your camera handy to capture images of lions, elephants, and other endangered species. Lunch can be enjoyed at one of the park’s rest areas, where you can also swim and watch animals flock to nearby watering holes, including hundreds of birds.

In contrast to the vast desert, Etosha National Park offers wide open grasslands, a massive salt pan covering 4731km2 and tall camel thorn trees mixed with Mopani trees. Wildlife flocks to the park because of its natural waterholes and diverse vegetation. In areas with thicker vegetation, some of the largest elephants as well as leopards can be found. In the grasslands, you can find lions, giraffes, ostriches and antelope species, while birders will love the salt pans, which attract flamingos during the rainy season. Etosha National Park is home to more than 340 species of birds, including the European bee-eater, kori bustard, and numerous migratory birds.

Day 18: Etosha National Park – Windhoek, Namibia

You can visit the Cheetah Conservation Fund after breakfast, which was established by National Geographic Grantee Dr Laurie Marker. Learn how they protect the world’s fastest land animal through conservation and community outreach, and enjoy a talk by one of the researchers. After that, take a drive through the grounds to see some of the rescues and rehabilitated cheetahs at the centre. Our final evening is in Windhoek.
