Day 11

Maun – Okavango Delta, Botswana

Once we’ve gathered all of our bags and food supplies together, we grab our sunblock and hats and climb aboard our 4X4 vehicle in anticipation of discovering the hidden wonders of the Okavango Delta. This stunning area is a natural wetland network, extending over approximately 1.6 million hectares of northern Botswana due to the rivers gushing south from Angola that divide repetitively on the flat Botswana plans to create a complex system of channels and an inland ‘delta’ – the only one of its kind in the world. Following a relaxed drive over rough and winding paths, we cross the ‘Buffalo Fence’ that exposes us to the wilderness of Africa. Once we have located the water’s edge we meet up with our local guides who are trained and extremely knowledgeable about the area. We then climb into their mokoros (traditional dugout canoes) and are softly ‘poled’ and navigated through the narrow waterways. Moving smoothly over glimmering ponds whilst snaking our way through the lush, green bulrushes and gorgeous untamed lilies, we set up our camp beneath some shade in order to enjoy a hearty lunch.

The afternoon is dedicated to participating in a wonderful game walk with the local guides, observing mighty hippos from your Mokoro or just unwinding at camp. Our evenings are spent listening to the wild calls of animals in the distance whilst we gather around a crackling campfire and cheer for our guides to sing us a traditional Tswana song or two.

Day 12

Okavango Delta – Maun, Botswana

Following a final game walk in the morning and a satisfying breakfast, we gather our things and pack them into our mokoros, leaving behind only our footprints. We smoothly glide over the quiet waterways and make our way back to the poler’s station where our 4X4 waits for us. Once we have said our goodbyes to our polers, we cross the buffalo fence and head back into civilization once more, where we delight in hot showers, a tasty lunch and a refreshing dip in the swimming pool. Feeling fresh and invigorated, this afternoon we are given a chance to join the guide for an outing into town where you are free to browse the shopping area and markets peppered around the central business district. A well-loved activity here is a flight over the Delta that gives you a fantastic aerial view of your enormous and magnificent surroundings. From the sky you will gain an entirely new perspective of the Delta and, subsequently, a better appreciation for the natural beauty that surrounded you for the past few days. Heading back to camp, we delight in a swim and a hearty supper that brings the night to an end, beneath the star-studded African sky.

Day 13

Maun – Khama Rhino Sanctuary

We awake early to a hearty breakfast and depart from Maun journeying through the greater Kalahari area via Mopipi, spotting enormous salt pans in the distance. Though it is a pleasant and beautiful drive, Mopipi’s population is rather small and is renowned as the least visited area in Botswana. We reach the Khama Rhino Sanctuary in the late morning and set up camp. In 1989, a few locals wanted to transform the Serowe Pan (formerly a hunting region) into a conservation area for the rhino that have made this place their home. The Pan was decided upon due to its rhino-friendly environment and its close proximity to a Botswana Defence Forse base which keeps the area guarded 24/7. Situated on the edge of the massive Kalahari Desert, Khama is a perfect environment for white rhino, zebra, wildebeest and giraffe. Khama is a community-based wildlife project that aids the locals and preaches the significance of protecting these creatures.

At noon we are treated to an open game drive, accompanied by an expert local ranger. During this we are educated about the surrounding wildlife and are taught fascinating facts about the animals we see as well as the abundant flora. Our final evening on this tour is spent gathered around an open fire where we bond with each other over shared experiences and the beauty of Mother Africa.

Trip Highlights: Kalahari Desert fringes, Khama Rhino Sanctuary, open vehicle game drive
Accommodation: Camp Itumela or similar (Twin share room with en‐suite facilities)
Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Crossing the magnificent Limpopo River into South Africa, we are treated to picturesque sights as we observe the transition from abundant plant life to populated civilization. Making our way via Mokopane where we stop for lunch, we journey into Gauteng and reach Johannesburg in the early evening, where our adventure with each other comes to an end.
