This makes it possible to see Victoria Falls from both Zimbabwe and Zambia but deciding on which one can hugely impact your experience and your wallet. And so, the first question most visitors ask is which side is better?
Zimbabwe is arguably the best side to see the falls because it is home to a whopping two-thirds of the falls. While on the Zimbabwe side you can enjoy excellent game-viewing opportunities, and easy access to other activities. However, Zambia’s ‘road-less-traveled’ feel and heart-pumping activities are hard to beat.

These include guided tours of Victoria Falls, sunset cruises on the Zambezi and easy access to day trip safaris in Botswana’s Chobe National Park.
In addition, both sides of the falls feature riverside lodge accommodation, traditional markets selling locally made crafts and carvings, as well as a plethora of restaurants to indulge in local cuisine. Why choose a Zimbabwe Victoria Falls tour?
The Zimbabwe side of Victoria Falls boasts 16 viewpoints and a network of pathways which allow you to see this natural wonder from every angle. Zimbabwe is home to the lion’s share of the falls and is considered the best place to get a classic view of Victoria Falls.
Here, the Victoria Falls National Park gives visitors easy access to popular lookout points. While on this side, head to Devil’s Cataract, Main Falls, Horseshoe Falls, and the well-named Rainbow Falls. All with great views of the length of the waterfall.
Despite Zimbabwe’s political instability, Victoria Falls town is one of Africa’s most visited destinations. Aside from having one of the seven wonders of the world in its backyard, the town boasts a world-class adventure-tourism scene bursting with welcoming locals and walkable streets lined with restaurants, bars and some of the best craft markets.
Need any more convincing? Here are a few more advantages to visiting Zimbabwe Victoria Falls:
- The Treetop Canopy Tour (ziplining) and the Lookout Café are only accessible in Zimbabwe.
- Zimbabwe has a great choice of accommodation within walking distance to the falls.
- Victoria Falls Town is within walking distance of the falls.
- The Victoria Falls rainforest offers activities such as game drives, bush walks, and horse-back safaris.
- On the Zimbabwe side of the falls, shopping and eating out are a better option than the Zambian side.
- Zimbabwe has more viewpoints of Victoria Falls than Zambia, including panoramas of the main falls.
Why choose a Victoria Falls Zambia tour?
Want an up-close view of a world wonder? Then head to the Zambia side of Victoria Falls. Although Zambia has only a 25% view of Victoria Falls – the eastern cataract – the region offers intrepid travelers a more unique way of experiencing the falls.
When the Zambezi River is in full flow (April/May) Zambia is often the more popular side to view Victoria Falls. Here thrill-seeking travelers can take an exhilarating (and soaking) walk along the edge of the precipice of Knife-Edge Bridge during high water season or witness the Boiling Pot – a massive whirlpool at the base of the waterfall – in the low season.
If you want to get as close to the Victoria Falls as you possibly can, follow in the footsteps of David Livingstone and make your way Livingstone Island. Only accessible from the Zambian side, Livingstone Island lies perched right on the very edge of Victoria Falls surrounded by a thundering mass of water.
Here, you’ll be able to see Victoria Falls through the eyes of the man who “discovered it” and will have the chance to learn about its history from ancient times when it served as a sacrificial site to the present day and its World Heritage status. Other unique vantage points on the Zambian side include the Falls Bridge, Devils Pool, and the Lookout Tree, all of which command panoramic views across the Main Falls.
Need any more convincing? Here are a few more reasons to see Victoria Falls in Zambia:
- Livingstone town is a little less touristy than Victoria Falls town and there is a museum focused on the history of David Livingstone and Chief Mukuni’s village.
- Devil’s Pool, on the edge of the falls, is only accessible from Zambia and during extreme low water months from mid-September to early/mid-January.
- Zambia offers more bucket list activities that cannot be accessed from Zimbabwe, such as swimming under the Falls and the ‘Under the Spray View’ (only possible between August and December).
- Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is slightly cheaper than Zimbabwe and gets you right up close to rushing water. Pry yourself away from the views and you’ll find excellent safari opportunities in the wildlife section of the park and a chance to spot the endangered white rhino.
Which side has better views of Victoria Falls, Zambia or Zimbabwe?
If your primary objective is to get the best view of Victoria falls, you may still be wondering which side to choose. On a perfect itinerary, you’d be able to see both sides of Victoria Falls. But, if you’re short on time, this is just not feasible. So ultimately, which side has the best views of Victoria Falls, Zambia or Zimbabwe?
While Zambia is great for getting up close to the falls, Zimbabwe is the best for great views of Victoria Falls. With around two-thirds of the falls and most of the viewpoints (16 in total) within its borders, Zimbabwe offers the benefit of face-on views of the Falls even in the height of the dry season.
Victoria Falls Zambia vs Zimbabwe – Travel info

From the untamed wilderness of Zambia to the mesmerizing patchwork of landscapes in Zimbabwe – this diverse part of Southern Africa is the Africa you’ve been dreaming of.
But, you may have a few questions before you jump headfirst into this bucket-list-worthy adventure. Health, safety, travel costs and accommodation options are among the most frequently asked questions.
So, if you were wondering if Zimbabwe is a safe country to visit or about what vaccines you need to travel in Zambia, this Victoria Falls Travel Guide has the answers! We’ve put together a complete travel guide for Zimbabwe and Zambia, covering essential travel advice, so you can decide which side of Victoria Falls best suits you.
Victoria Falls Zimbabwe Travel Guide
If you’re thinking “is Zimbabwe worth visiting?” – the answer is a resounding YES! Zimbabwe is one of Africa’s most underrated destinations. Often relegated to a necessary stopover en-route to the legendary Victoria Falls, this landlocked country of rugged terrain and diverse wildlife is a rewarding destination.
It’s a picture-perfect country of forested mountains, sun-washed grasslands, and luxury accommodations. While traveling through the diverse patchwork of landscapes, adventurous travelers will be ticking off travel goals like rapid-fire. Either spying Africa’s iconic Big Five amid the country’s lush national parks or discovering World Heritage-listed archaeological sites, and standing in the wake of the fourth-longest river in Africa. Traveling in Zimbabwe does not disappoint.
When is the best time to visit Victoria Falls Zimbabwe
The Victoria Falls flows all year round but the best time to see the falls in Zimbabwe is from February to May. This time of year is directly after the region’s summer rains, allowing you to see the world’s largest sheet of falling water flowing at its greatest volume.
Is Zimbabwe safe?
In 2017 the post-Mugabe dawn that millions of Zimbabweans longed for had finally arrived. After decades of political turmoil, some stability is slowly returning to the country and intrepid tourists have taken notice. Those who have traveled in Zimbabwe insist that its generally a safe and friendly destination for tourists.
Yet, it’s not all smooth sailing. There is a moderate level of crime in the cities, with mugging, pickpocketing and jewelry theft being common among solo travelers walking dimly lit streets after. It’s important to remain vigilant at Harare International Airport and when leaving banks and cashpoints. Don’t carry or display large amounts of cash in public places.
The country’s economy is fragile; widespread poverty, lack of resources and corruption is rife which affects an estimated one in four locals. While knowing the country’s current socio-economic climate, being savvy will also go a long way in keeping you safe – no matter where you travel.
The golden rule about meeting new people is to avoid the topic of politics and the same is true for travel. You should avoid all political demonstrations and rallies as they can be unpredictable and may turn violent (as anywhere else in the world).
Its also important to note that Zimbabwe is a conservative country and same-sex relationships are considered to be illegal under local law. Prosecutions are rare but public displays of affection may cause offense, regardless of gender or sexuality. You can find more information on the GALZ Association website.
Travel Vaccines for Victoria falls Zimbabwe
There are no vaccinations that are an entry requirement for Zimbabwe. However, you will need to show a yellow fever certificate if you have entered the country after visiting another country with yellow fever risks, such as Kenya and Tanzania.
Unfortunately, Victoria Falls is a malaria zone but it is preventable with some precautions taken. There are several drugs on the market that are licensed for preventing malaria and you must consult with your doctor to find the one that’s best suited for you. While you’re traveling in the Victoria Falls region, you should also try to avoid getting bitten by mosquitoes as much as possible. Insect repellent and sleeping under a mosquito net is a must.
Victoria Falls accommodation in Zimbabwe
If you prefer luxury lodges over rugged campsites, then Zimbabwe is where you should stay when visiting Victoria Falls. Situated only one kilometer away from the falls, the town of Victoria Falls is the bustling epicenter of tourism in Zimbabwe. Its lined with hotels and lodges which places visitors within walking distance of the Falls.
Whether you’re after a luxury room with sprawling views, a tranquil riverside stay or a private lodge with replete with butler-style concierge service, there are plenty of choices of accommodation at the falls in Zimbabwe.
The sheer volume of accommodation options can be overwhelming. So, if you’re wondering “Where should I stay when visiting Victoria Falls?”, be sure to check out Victoria Falls Safari Club. Situated just 6km away from the Victoria Falls Bridge, this exclusive 20-room boutique hotel is perfect for those wanting to be away from the crowds while remaining in close proximity to the falls. And, when it comes to indulgent comfort, the Safari Club leaves no stone left unturned.
Spacious rooms with views, a two-tiered swimming pool, butler service, complimentary afternoon tea and hourly shuttles to surrounding attractions are just a few of the facilities you can look forward to. These perks are topped off with complimentary sundowners overlooking the Zambezi National Park. Added attractions include access to the “Vulture Culture” experience and The Boma – Dinner & Drum Show.

Flights to Victoria Falls Zimbabwe
There are no direct flights to Zimbabwe from the USA or the UK although the quickest route is via Johannesburg, South Africa.
Zimbabwe’s main airport is Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport, formerly known as the Harare International Airport.
However, the Victoria Falls airport is the best option for traveling in Zimbabwe to see the falls and has regular flights from Johannesburg.
Things to do in Zimbabwe – other than Victoria Falls
Although Victoria Falls is Zimbabwe’s main headliner, don’t make the mistake of thinking that’s all to see. This country is jam-packed with amazing things to do, you just need to know where to look. Here are just a few of our favorite things to do in Zimbabwe:
1. Go on a walking safari in Mana Pools National Park.
2. Take in the otherworldly landscape of balancing rocks at Matobo National Park
3. Discover the Great Zimbabwe Ruins
Victoria Falls Zambia Travel Guide
To some, Zambia is nothing more than another gateway to Victoria Falls. But, while the crowds make a b-line to more high profile safari hotspots after a quick glimpse of the falls, those in the know venture deeper into the country’s mesmerizing wilderness.
Having remained well off the tourist circuit, Zambia is the African bush at its most raw. Beyond Victoria Falls, the country’s wildlife – both predators and prey – wander through remote, unfenced camps where intrepid travelers fall asleep to the sound of hooting owls, whooping hyenas, and distant lion roars.
Zambia isn’t just a taste of the African wild, it’s the whole buffet spread! One day you’re sizing up your footprint against the tracks of elephants just past and the next you’re watching 10 million fruit bats navigate region’s dusty-pink sky in the world’s largest mammal migration.
This is Zambia, wild and untamed – and you’ll never feel more alive!
When is the best time to visit Victoria Falls Zambia
Unlike Zimbabwe’s year round travel, Zambia has a sub-tropical climate with dry and wet seasons which drastically impact your itinerary. The best time to visit Victoria Falls on the Zambia side is in March-May at the end of the rainy season. This is when the Zambezi River is in full flood and the falls are at their most spectacular. If you travel between June to October you could find yourself staring at a rocky wall as the Zambian side dries up.
Still, don’t discount Zambia completely in the dry season. Adrenaline addicts welcome the low water levels as this opens up a plethora of heart-pumping activities. Either partake in white-water rafting or brave a dip in the legendary Devil’s Pool – a natural rock pool right on the edge of the falls.
Is Zambia safe?
Given its remote feel and epic wilderness, you may be wondering; “is Zambia a safe country to visit.” But, fear not! With around 800,000 tourists traveling every year, Zambia is regarded as a safe country to visit. That being said, tourists are encouraged to travel sensibly, especially in cities and tourist areas.
Due to previous political conflict with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, tourists traveling in Zambia are advised to avoid areas along the Zambia–Congo border, especially around Lake Mweru. Aside from this, violent crime is extremely unlikely and if you’re on a Southern Africa Overland Tour, staying in lodges, hotels, and campsites, then you have essentially no cause for concern.
Recommended Travel Vaccinations for Zambia
Although Zambia requires no vaccines, the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention recommends the following vaccinations for the region: hepatitis A, hepatitis B, rabies and typhoid, and boosters for tetanus, diphtheria, and measles. These are optional and are not a rule for entry into Zambia.
That said, a yellow-fever vaccination certificate is necessary when entering Zambia from a yellow-fever infected area (such as Greater Kruger Park, Tanzania or Kenya). We therefore recommend carrying one as its often requested at the border.
In addition to this, Malaria is common in many parts of Zambia (including cities). Which is why we also advise you take antimalarials. Always be sure to take precautions to avoid bites and apply insect repellent containing DEET. We would also recommend you wear long trousers and sleeves in the evening as well as early morning while ensuring you use a mosquito net when sleeping.
Zambia accommodation at Victoria Falls
In Zambia, you’ll experience some of Southern Africa’s wildest and most remote destinations and there’s no shortage of epic places to stay. Most of the accommodation on the Zambian side are along the banks of the upper Zambezi River. This location gives travelers easy access to attractions in the area. Highlights include Devils Pool and the Victoria Falls Bridge which is famous for its bungee jumping and rope swings.
Accommodation around the Victoria Falls area on the Zambian side is very popular. Here you can choose from hotels, hostels, backpackers, campsites, lodges, guest-houses, and resorts that cater to a variety of budgets and tastes.
It can be overwhelming trying to decide where to stay, so see our budget accommodation recommendation below:
Jollyboys Backpackers & Camp
Situated in Livingstone Town, Jollyboys was the first hostel in Zambia and has been catering to budget travelers since 1996. And, although time has passed, this OG hostel is anything but dated. The hostel is perfect for tech-forward adventurers, boasting free internet, adaptors for devices, solar-powered hot showers as well as digital safes and lockers. Free city maps, complimentary daily shuttles to Victoria Falls and an onsite travel desk are some of the perks. And, after a long day of exploring, the hotel’s well-stocked bar and restaurant, onsite spa, and vibey communal lounge area provide the perfect way to unwind or mingle with like-minded travelers.
For eco-conscious travelers, the Jollyboys Backpackers & Camp also does its part to have a positive impact on the community. The hostel is also a part of Pack For A Purpose which encourages guests to bring requested supplies from their home country to donate to Lubasi Children’s Home. To find out more about these responsible tourism efforts, get in touch with the team.
Getting to Victoria Falls in Zambia
There are no direct flights available from the UK or USA to Zambia and the quickest route is via Johannesburg, South Africa. The country has 21 airports but travelers going on a Victoria Falls tour in Zambia should look at Livingstone’s main airport; Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International.

Seeing Both Sides of Victoria Falls
Of course, if you have the time, the best way to experience Victoria Falls is to view it from both Zimbabwe and Zambia. The good news is, no matter which side, border crossings here are easy, especially with a KAZA Uni-Visa.
The KAZA Uni-Visa is for travellers who want to see both sides of Victoria Falls. Another advantage is you can take day-trips to Botswana to visit attractions like Chobe National Park – provided you return to Zambia or Zimbabwe the same day.
If you’re planning on seeing Victoria Falls in Zambia AND Zimbabwe, the best time to go is between May and August. During this time of year, the spray is not so pervasive, allowing you to actually see and photograph the Falls on both sides.
Cost: US$50 per person
Valid: 30 days from entry
Border crossings: Unlimited (between Zambia and Zimbabwe only)
