Botswana Tours, Budget Overland Safari Packages

Wide selection of Budget Botswana Tours and Adventure Tours. Botswana is situated in Southern Africa and landlocked by South Africa, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. It covers 600 370 square kilometres and is home to only two million people, making it one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world.

Why go on a budget Botswana Tour?

Botswana’s capital is Gaborone, with Maun and Kasane the gateways to the wildlife. Botswana is known for its remote and unexplored national parks and wildlife areas, to the green lush riverbanks and canals of the Okavango Delta.

The Chobe National Park covers 11 700 square kilometres of flora and fauna, which can easily be accessed from Kasane. The Park is home to the ‘Big 5’ and especially known for the Chobe River Sunset Cruise which offers extraordinary game viewing opportunities.

Another well-known National Park is the Moremi National Park which was voted in 2008 as the ‘Best Game Reserve in Africa’ by the African Travel and Tourism Organisation. The area is situated in the central and eastern regions of the Okavango Delta, including the Moremi Tongue and chief’s island, boasting one of the most wonderful and varied ecosystems of the African continent.

Botswana also has the largest inland delta in the world, the Okavango, which leads into the barren sand areas of the Kalahari Desert. The Delta is fed by the Okavango River which comes all the way from the Angolan Highlands. While cruising through the calm waterways of the Delta on a local dug out canoe (mokoro) from wetland to dryland, look out for the african bush elephant, african buffalo, hippopotamus, blue wildebeest, giraffe, nile crocodile, lion, cheetah, leopard, black rhinoceros, white rhinoceros and so much more.

Highlights of Botswana

Chobe National Park

Covering 11,000 sq km (4300 sq mi), Chobe National Park has the biggest variety of wildlife compared to anywhere else in Botswana. A good place to start exploring it is at its northern tip, in a town, called Kasane. Its location makes a good base for visits to the park. With up to 500 herds of elephants, they are Chobe’s main attraction, closely followed by lions, cheetahs, hippos, hyena, crocodile, buffaloes, giraffes, warthogs, otter, zebra, antelope, jackals and many bird species.

Chobe National Park Tours and Safaris

Makgadikgadi Pan

No landscape on earth is like this. Once an enormous lake, the Makgadikgadi Pans are now three immense salt pans (the largest on earth). During the sizzling heat of late winter days, these stark pans take on a disorienting and ethereal austerity. All sense of space and direction is completely destroyed by heat mirages as imaginary lakes shimmer and then disappear, and ostriches take flight, while stones seem to turn into mountains floating in mid-air.

During annual rains, the hollows in the pans form temporary lakes. The water turns fringing grasses green, and herd animals and birds in huge numbers arrive for the party.

Makgadikgadi Pans Tours and Safaris

The Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta is one of the world’s last untamed wildernesses. Starting at the Angolan highlands, this watery mass of 16,000km² elaborate channels and islands is the world’s largest inland delta. It lies in Botswana’s northwest, and flows in the opposite direction each year. The middle of the delta, which consists of 20% of the greater delta area, is protected by the Moremi Wildlife Reserve.

Local farmers used to call the Okavango Delta a ‘useless swamp’, and wanted it to be drained so they could use it as farmland. Fortunately, the delta has been recognised for its significance in conservation, and today this mysterious, placid and beautiful area is a sanctuary for a huge elephant population, as well as lion, antelope, cheetah, giraffe, wild dog, leopard, crocodile, hippo, buffalo, a big number of bird species, and over 80 species of fish. Needless to say, the African Fish Eagle finds this place to be paradise.

Bear in mind that the Okavango Delta is incredibly big, which makes spotting wildlife a little more challenging than your average game park. This is not for the impatient traveller, but rather for the traveller who wants to experience Africa for what it is, and not only for the Big Five.

If you fancy yourself a patient and laid-back traveller, then jump on a plane or 4×4, and let it drop you off at the Okavango Delta for a few days. Here you’ll drift around on a mokoro (dug-out canoe) and go on walking safaris – the best ways to explore the delta. Don’t despair, you will have a poler with you, who will steer your mokoro for you and will find safe spots for you to swim. You’ll also get a chance to go on a walking safari with an experienced delta guide, and track some spoor. Your guide will fill you in on everything you need to know about the wildlife, birdlife, plant life and all the intricate ways of the delta

Okavango Delta Tours and Safaris

Moremi National Park

Mostly described as one of the most beautiful wildlife reserves in Africa. Moremi National Park is a mixture of lagoons, floodplains and mopane woodland and acacia forests. Its incredible diversity of plant and animal life has made Moremi famous.

Moremi Tours and Safaris

Wildlife Highlights of Botswana

One of the best safari destinations in Africa, Botswana is blessed with a variety of habitats that allow for a wealth of wildlife to roam its massive unfenced parks and reserves, which make up a whopping third of the country’s land. Rhino have recently been re-introduced in the Okavango Delta after being poached out, which means Botswana now offers the Big Five.

Chobe National Park has the largest concentration of game in the country, as well as the continent’s biggest population of elephants – an estimated 50 000 of them. In the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve is known as the “predator capital of Africa”, and is fantastic for spotting lion and leopard, and it’s also particularly good for populations of the highly endangered wild dog. This reserve is also the best place in the country to see rhino. Roan, sable and tsessebe are unusual antelopes found in Moremi, while rare red lechwe and elusive sitatunga are rewarding sightings.

While the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park don’t have abundant wildlife, they do offer the majestic black-maned Kalahari lions and cheetah, as well as desert-adapted species such as gemsbok and springbok and smaller animals such as bat-eared foxes, jackals, mongoose and meerkats

When is the best time to go on a Botswana Safari Tour?

Dry season – May to October – Winter:

If you visit during these months you will experience a very dry climate with low humidity. The great attribute about visiting this time of year is that the animals congregate around the waterholes giving you plenty of time to take great photographs and quietly enjoy the tranquility of the scene.

May – Cool temperatures of about 10°C in the mornings warming to 28°C in the afternoon.

June, July and August – Very cold on early morning game drives, so pack your thermals. Expect the thermometer to drop to 6°C in the morning and below freezing at night, but you can enjoy warmer temperatures of about 25°C in the afternoons when you can laze by the pool at your accommodation.

September and October – Now is when the heat sets in and wonderfully hot temperatures of about 35°C can be expected.

Wet season – November to April – Summer:

November and December – You can expect cooler temperatures as clouds fill the atmosphere and bring on late afternoon showers. December mornings are mild at 20°C with hot temperatures of 34°C in the afternoons. This is a good time of the year for comfortable game safaris.

January and February – Bring out your waterproof jackets and trousers for torrential downpours that can continue for days. It is not cold, but humidity is high at 50-80%.

March and April – The rain lessens and the temperature cools again. This continues through to April with balmy, clear weather and temperatures of 30°C in the day.

10 reasons to travel to Botswana

Okavango Delta

For many travellers to Botswana, the Okavango Delta is the number one reason they visit the landlocked African country. The world’s largest inland delta is a massive wilderness area of waterways, islands, floodplains and lagoons that support a huge and varied wildlife population – everything from elephant and leopard to wild dog and buffalo. The best ways to experience the Delta are by mokoro (a traditional canoe that glides you through waterways and channels to spot game and birds), and from the air – on a helicopter flight – to really take in the vast and beautiful landscape.

Chobe National Park

After the Okavango, Chobe is Botswana’s most sought after safari destination, with one of the largest concentrations of wildlife of the entire African continent. Chobe National Park is Botswana’s most biologically diverse park, with four different ecological areas – grass woodland, two marsh areas and the Chobe Riverfront –
providing habitats for 450 species of birds, roan and sable antelopes, lions, leopards, wild dogs, and 50 000 elephants. A highlight of Chobe is that you can do land-based game viewing, as well as river-based wildlife spotting from boats (including house boats) on the Chobe River.

Moremi Game Reserve

The only official protected area of the Okavango Delta, Moremi is home to the most diverse animal population in Botswana, with the Big Five (black and white rhino were re-introduced here), as well as more than 400 species of birds. Moremi is known as the “predator capital of Africa”, with populations of lion, cheetah, leopard and wild dog. While many lodges in the Okavango are on private concessions and are extremely pricey and only accessible by private plane, Moremi offers affordable camping in beautiful locations for self-driving travellers.

Tsodilo Hills

Known as the “Louvre of the desert”, Tsodilo Hills – rock formations amongst the sand dunes of the Kalahari – are home to bigger concentration of ancient rock art than just about anywhere else in Africa. This spiritually sacred place has some 4500 paintings that date back thousands of years covering caves and rock walls.

Central Kalahari Game Reserve

If you want to escape other safari goers and really get away from it all, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve can’t be beaten for isolation and space. It’s the largest most remote reserve in southern Africa, and it’s one of Botswana’s least developed, so it’s perfect if you want an off-the-beaten track adventure in a wilderness of sand dunes, mopane and acacia forests, vast open grasslands and salt pans.

Tuli Block

In far eastern Botswana, the Tuli Block is a narrow finger of land is wedged between Zimbabwe and South Africa and made up of 800 000 hectares of conservancy land, mainly made up of privately owned wildlife reserves. Scenically, the Tuli Block is spectacular – and quite different to most other wilderness areas in Botswana – with rocky outcrops, riverine forests and plains dotted with baobabs. Here, you can spot the Big Five and discover San rock paintings and the remnants of ancient pottery in Lepokole Hills.

Makgadikgadi Pans National Park

In the Kalahari Basin, the Makgadikgadi Pans cover an area the size of Portugal, making it the largest salt flat in the world. For most of the year, the area is dry and arid, and the cracked pans look like the surface of the moon, while after the rainy season, some of the pans flood and attract animals such as zebra, wildebeest, red hartebeest and gemsbok. One of the highlights of Makgadikgadi Pans is Kubu Island, a crescent-shaped island of granite rocks and old baobabs surrounding by the blinding whiteness of Sowa Pan. Considered to be a sacred site by the local people, the island still has the remains of stone age tools and arrowheads.

Zebra Migration

You may have heard of the wildebeest migration in Tanzania and Kenya, but there’s also a spectacular mammal migration that takes place in Botswana. Every year 25 000 zebras migrate in a circular loop of 580 kilometres from the Okavango Delta south to the Makgadikgadi grasslands, followed by a trail of predators – lion, leopard, hyena and cheetah – making for some spectacular game viewing.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

This massive park, which stretches across the border and into South Africa, is one of Botswana’s least visited wilderness areas. The Botswanan side of the park is much wilder than the South African side, and you need to have a 4×4 to tackle the sandy roads, and to bring your own water and be entirely self-sufficient to stay at the unfenced bush camps. If you’re up for the adventure, the park comes with many rewards: not many other cars, beautiful dune landscapes and sightings of the Kalahari animals: black-maned lions, leopard, cheetah, hyena, bat-eared foxes and meerkats.

High value – low impact tourism
Botswana has a policy of low impact tourism, which limits the number of people who can stay in conservation areas. This means the cost of a safari in Botswana is relatively high (especially compared with neighbouring South Africa), but low impact tourism has a huge benefit in helping conservation of wilderness areas by reducing visitor numbers. And as a benefit to Botswana’s safari goers, there aren’t lots of vehicles crowded around wildlife sightings.
