Why book this trip? 

This tour covers fantastic countries and cities from Johannesburg and Cape Town to the Kingdom of Swaziland. The ever popular Kruger National Park is included in this tour where you can spot the ‘Big 5’, amongst other large beasts. A highlight has to be Knysna where we take a trip to the beautiful Storms River mouth for a walk up the gorge. Hermanus also holds many gems from spectacular whale watching (from June to November) and superb beach-side restaurants and craft markets.

This is a popular accommodated small group tour (max 12) exploring the colourful Rainbow Nation. Hiking, game viewing and multi-cultural experiences will enchant you throughout the country of South Africa. The accommodation on tour is a mixture of guest houses, chalets, lodges or permanent tented camps. The accommodation we use is graded 2 to 3 star and is comfortable, clean and on a twin share bases (en-suites with occasional shared bathrooms). All linen and bedding is provided. Most meals are provided by the guides around the fire or on the roadside during travel days (the truck has a fully kitted kitchen). Should you be a single traveller you will be roomed up with another same gender traveller unless you prefer a single supplement (limited to 2 travellers). The tour is a limited participation safari tour where your tour leaders will do all the meal preparation but we do ask travellers to help (on rotation) with the washing up. There are some long travel days which require early morning starts, to gain the most of our day in Africa.

Itinerary

Day 1: Johannesburg to Mpumaplanga, KwaZulu-Natal

Leaving the City of Gold, Johannesburg, at around 06h30, we make our way east toward Mpumalanga – a region identifiable by the majestic mountains, picturesque passes, lush valleys, flowing rivers, mighty waterfalls and dense forests. Hardly any other areas in the world can match the incredible splendour of the lowveld and escarpment. We pay a visit to Pilgrims Rest, Bourkes Luck Potholes and the renowned God’s Window before making our way to our lodging for the night which is situated on the slopes by Graskop. Enjoy a tasty dinner at Mogodi Lodge to rejuvenate you.

Days 2 – 3: Kruger National Park, South Africa

The biggest Game Reserve in South Africa, the Kruger National Park contains the world’s most enormous population of different animal species, and boasts an incredible 16 different ecosystems. Enthralling game drives grant us spectacular game viewing as we search for an array of wildlife as well as Africa’s Big 5, which includes the lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo.

Day 4: Kingdom of Swaziland 

The Malolotja Nature Reserve in the Kingdom of Swaziland, a region filled with mountainous landscapes, is our next destination. Famous for a fantastic array of habitats ranging from short grassland to thick riverine scrub, bushveld and dense forest, we explore the Reserve on foot in order to truly enjoy our surrounds and the incredible mountain scenery laid out before us. Unwind around a campfire supper and catch up on a good night’s sleep in our mountain cabins.

Days 5 – 6: Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal

We pay a visit to craft markets nearby Mbabane that boasts an interesting variety of handmade crafts, and the local witchdoctor (Sangoma) is an experience that you should not miss. We then make our way into South Africa once more and journey to Mkuzi Game Reserve, which is a secure sanctuary for the threatened black rhino. We also visit a waterhole and observe a wide range of wildlife coming down to drink. A lovely game drive in the morning is followed by a cultural afternoon visiting a Zulu village situated on the Game Reserve’s border, and being educated about the culture of the Zulu.

Days 7 – 8: Drakensberg Mountains, Lesotho

uKhahlamba meaning the Barrier of Spears, otherwise known as The Drakensberg Mountains, is a world heritage site and a mountainous paradise spanning 200 kilometres in length. From Mkuzi we make our way further south to the foot of these mountains, where we will spend the following two evenings in charming cottages. We will spend some time taking strolls along the gorgeous mountain stream trails or simply marvelling at the spectacular views provided to us by the lush mountains.

Drakensberg Mountains

Days 9 – 10: Wild Coast, South Africa

For years the Wild Coast has been a mostly unspoilt paradise in South Africa. There are untouched stretches of gorgeous coastline, vast open areas and untarnished forest regions. A highlight of these two days has to be visiting the town of Qunu, the burial site and home town of Nelson Mandela. Tonight we stay in Kei Mouth and the following day you are free to explore the area, mingle with the locals or chill on the beach.

Day 11: Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa

The Addo Elephant National Park was formed in 1931 in order to conserve the last remaining eleven wild elephants. Presently there are over 600 elephants that wander through the region. The Park boasts fantastic game viewing of many species, particularly the black rhino, Cape buffalo, lion and leopard, and more than 400 bird species in the greater park area.

Addo Elephant National Park

Days 12-13: Knysna / Tsitsikamma, South Africa

For two evenings we will reside in a lodge resort located in Knysna, which is situated on a serene lagoon. We embark on a day trip to the Storms River mouth where we can go on hikes up the gorge and along the jagged coast. The Tsitsikamma National Park is comprised of 80 kilometres of incredible sea and landscapes, an isolated mountainous area with sheltered valleys and coastal forests with deep river ravines that lead down to the ocean. There is also a choice of taking part in the world’s highest bungee jump at Bloukrans Bridge, from a spectacular height of 216 metres. Be sure to test out some of the sumptuous seafood of one of Knysna’s many fantastic restaurants (own expense).

Day 14: Hermanus, South Africa

Hermanus boasts some of the finest land-based whale watching in the  world. From the months of June to November, the Southern Right whales make their way from the southern sea to the coast in order to give birth and to copulate in the shallow waters. During Summer we will embark on a walk through Fernkloof Nature Reserve to see the stunning flowering fynbos. A delicious meal out at one of the lovely local restaurants will bring an end to the day.

Days 15-16: Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, with the iconic Table Mountain at its heart. On our journey to Cape Town, we pay a visit to the gorgeous town of Stellenbosch which is famous for its wines. Here, we participate in some delicious wine tasting and a pleasant tour of the wine cellars. The ‘Mother City’ boasts various attractions, including Cape Point, the Hout Bay harbour, the renowned sun-kissed beaches and the V&A Waterfront. There is also an optional outing to Robben Island at your own expense. Be sure to try out the scrumptious food served at many of the fantastic restaurants Cape Town has to offer.

Overnight: Sweetest Guesthouses – Sweetest Guesthouses is a collection of individually decorated houses in a metropolitan area of Cape Town near the V&A Waterfront. Day 17: Cape Town, South Africa (Tour Ends)

We hike up the majestic Table Mountain in the morning to observe the breathtaking view over Cape Town, extending out into the bay and even to Robben Island. Having spent these past few weeks exploring the finest features of South Africa, we take in one last look at the beautiful city of Cape Town and finish up some last minute shopping before our tour winds to an end in the early evening at the guest house.
