Four Great Camps in Botswana

1. Xakanaxa Camp in Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve

Location

This 3-star camp in Botswana is popular for its location right on the banks of the Khwai River on the Xakanaxa Lagoon. The smooth, quiet waters of the lagoon offers peace and tranquility and a variety of bird and animal life to spot while you lounge on the terrace that overlooks the lagoon.

Accommodation

Thirteen beautiful Meru-style luxury safari tents provide comfort and protection from the elements. En-suite bathrooms within the tent are fitted with a shower, basin and ablution facilities. During the heat of the day a gentle spray from the water sprinkler system will cool you down, while in the cool of the night you can wrap yourself up in a gown or poncho provided in each tent. Basic toiletries are supplied, as well as insect repellant. Electricity is supplied by a generator that runs from 05h30 to 19h00, and the water is heated by gas.

Activities

Besides relaxing on the terrace and doing some bird watching, there are plenty of other activities at this camp site. Go on a game drive (day or night), hop into a ‘mokoro’ (a traditional dug-out canoe) or take off on a powerboat for some thrilling water game viewing. For the more active traveller, go on a walking safari or try your hand at fishing.

2. Sango Safari Camp, 286 Hospital Road, Moremi Game Reserve

Location

Sango Safari Camp is on the border of Moremi Game Reserve just outside of the traditional Khwai village. There is plenty of wildlife and African scenery to enrich your safari in this luxury camp.

Accommodation

The camp offers six en-suite meru tents that sleep 12 guests. The classic décor will remind you of yesteryear. They have spared no expense with hand-crafted furnishings that combines luxury with a true African experience. Feel one with nature as you shower outdoors using a bucket shower – a truly unique experience. There are en-suite ablutions provided for your convenience.

Activities

The ever-changing seasonal environment provides an abundance of animals and birds that freely roam the camp. Go on walking safaris and drives, or venture down the lagoon on a traditional dug-out canoe.

3. Belmond Khwai River Lodge, Moremi Game Reserve

Location

Khwai River Lodge is sheltered by the greenery of large trees on the edge of a forest with a view of the floodplains that stretches on for miles. Here you will discover the beauty of nature as you unwind in your serene surroundings of this luxury camp. In the heart of nature you will see lions, cheetahs, hippos and prolific birdlife, so remember to take your binoculars.

Accommodation

You will stay in luxury tents, allowing the outdoors in and the soothing sounds of nature. Safely built on raised wooden platforms you will get a spectacular view of your surroundings. Laze about in the comfortable deck chairs or hammock and take full advantage of the sunrises and sunsets. Complete with en-suite bathrooms, a well-stocked mini-bar, air-conditioning and a four-poster bed with mosquito netting, this accommodation is a real treat for anyone on an African safari.

Activities

There are loads of activities that have been chosen to enhance your stay at Khwai River Lodge, Choose from game drives, moonlight safaris, walking safaris, bird watching or visiting the San bushmen and experiencing their way of life. When you need to freshen up why not take a dip in the large cool blue pool and dry off in the African sun.

4. Mombo Camp, Mombo Island, Moremi Game Reserve

Location

This camp is situated in the Mombo Concession towards the north of Chief’s Island in Botswana. Covered by a canopy of trees, Mombo camp overlooks the wide open floodplains of the Okavango Delta flourishing with wildlife and spectacular vistas.

Accommodation

There are nine tents that are elevated two metres off the ground with verandahs to unwind and spot game from. The living and dining areas are covered by thatched roofs that give a wonderful aroma that adds to the atmosphere of your abode. En-suite bathrooms are provided for your convenience with either outdoor or indoor showers. Try the outdoor shower for a unique and refreshing experience that may be a once in a lifetime opportunity!

Activities

Previous guests have had wonderful wildlife experiences right by their tents, but if you want more of an adventure head off on a morning or afternoon game drive and look out for leopards, hyaenas, herds of buffalo and even black and white rhino that are thriving in the park due to the Botswana Rhino Reintroduction Programme. A plunge pool is provided for your leisure time, but there are no other water activities in this area.
