Palapye to Blyde River Canyon Area, South Africa
Today we travel into South Africa and carry onward to our campsite that overlooks the magnificent Blyde River Canyon. Named for the Blyde River that flows through it, the canyon is over 26 kilometres in length and is around 800 metres deep and forms the northern edge of the majestic Drakensberg Mountain Range. It is known as a ‘green canyon’ because of the unique occurrence of plant life that lines it. The primary viewpoints along the canyon include the 3 Rondavels, named so due to their traditional hut-like appearance, and the beautiful God’s Window that provides incredible vistas of the canyon and it’s surrounds.
Please note: there is a small entry fee at each of these attractions that will need to be paid upon arrival. The money generated goes toward the support of the local communities. There are also many locals who sell their crafts in this area.
