Insight into the Serengeti Upgraded Camping Excursion

The following will give you a little more insight about the Serengeti Assisted-Camping Excursion valid on a selection of our Camping and Comfort tours (this does not apply to all tours).

The cost of the Serengeti Excursion is not included in the tour price or the activity package. To partake in this 3 night (4 day) camping excursion is R15 800 per person. Based on a minimum of 4 travellers booking. We highly recommend pre-booking or pre-praying this activity, in order to ensure availability of this optional activity. The single supplement on tour does not cover the Serengeti excursion, therefore please expect to share with a fellow traveller for the duration of the excursion.

4 Day (3 night) Serengeti Upgraded Camping Excursion

This is an assisted-camping excursion which takes place on 4×4 safari vehicles departing and returning to Arusha, the starting and ending point for this excursion. Depending on your chosen Camping or Comfort overland tour route; the order in which you visit the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater may be swapped for logistical reasons.

You will be separated from your tour group and travel along with fellow travellers who have purchased the upgrade. For this excursion you will need to pack overnight bags as you will be unable to bring all your luggage along. We recommend you pack wet wipes and toilet paper as the shared facilities at the campsites are very basic and at times not sufficiently maintained. The campsite is owned by Tanzania National Parks and with thousands of visitors annually, can be lacking in cleanliness.

Day 1: Camping at Seronera Campsite inside the Serengeti National Park

The following days are set aside for the 3-night optional camping excursion into the Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater. This morning we depart Arusha on our 4×4 safari vehicles heading into the Serengeti National Park for our 2 night stay. Upon entering the Serengeti NP, we commence our first afternoon game drive en-route to Seronera Camp, where we will be camping for the following 2 nights. Our 4×4 safari vehicles comfortably seat 7 travellers per vehicle, allowing each person a window seat. Each vehicle has a pop-up roof; which is opened whilst you are in the national park on a game drive to allow for optimal game viewing.

Day 2: Camping at Seronera Campsite inside the Serengeti National Park

We spend the entire day game driving through the Serengeti. Our game drive route is based on the movement of game and, last recorded sightings.

As an assisted-camping excursion; you will be camping in 2-man dome tents comfortably sleeping 2 adults. The tents are put up / taken down by your Guides daily, and you are welcome to assist to speed up the camp setup. Our bathroom facilities in the Serengeti are very basic with showers warmed by means of a “donkey system” (water tanks are heated by fire).

Day 3: Camping at Simba Campsite on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater

Today we depart on our last morning game drive within the Serengeti National Park en-route to exiting the national park. As we exit the Serengeti NP, we make our way to the Ngorongoro Crater Conservancy where we camp on the edge of the Ngorongoro Crater – possibly one campsite with the most spectacular view!

Day 4: Game Drive Ngorongoro Crater + Return to Arusha

Today marks a very early morning start to your day, as you pack up camp and embark on your morning game drive within the Ngorongoro Crater. The Crater is one of the most diverse eco-systems home to a variety of wildlife including antelope, elephant, an array of bird life and of course the Big Cats. The only game not found within the Crater are giraffe (as Crater rim sides are too steep for the giraffe).

After our morning game drive and lunch in the Ngorongoro Crater, we depart and return to Arusha arriving mid to late afternoon reuniting with our Overland Guide and truck.
