Maun – Okavango Delta, Botswana

Once we have gathered our bags and food supplies, we grab our sunblock and hats and climb aboard our 4X4 vehicle in anticipation of discovering the hidden wonders of the Okavango Delta. We head to the ‘mokoro’ station and are introduced to the local Tswana ‘polers’, our guides for the excursion, and transfer our luggage and equipment to the mokoros (dug-out canoes). We travel by these shallow canoes among giant lily pads and tall grasses to our camp on the edge of the Okavango. From our camp we head out on a guided walk in search of some of the abundant birdlife and larger mammals that inhabit this area. The entire area is a natural wetland spreading over some 1.6 million hectares of Northern Botswana providing a perfect environment for the wildlife that roams here. The Okavango River rises in Angola and flows south dividing repeatedly and then spreads out into a broad inland delta which is the only one of it’s kind in the world. We enjoy the wilderness experience and in the evening the camp is an unforgettable experience.
