Safaris near Cape Town

One may think that Cape Town can’t offer the traveller any more than it already does, but still it continues to impress. Now you don’t have to travel into ‘deepest darkest Africa’ to experience fantastic wildlife and amazing scenery. Just a hop, skip and a jump from Cape Town city and you will be in the bush tracking wild animals. One great advantage of these reserves is that they are all malaria-free.

The following is a list safaris near Cape Town:

Aquila Private Game Reserve

This is only an hour and a half’s drive from Cape Town in the Klein Karoo. Game drives are offered in the morning and the evening where you can see rhino, lion, cheetah, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and ostriches. They also offer horse-back safaris and visits to bushmen rock art sites.

Fairy Glen

This is only a 1 hour drive from Cape Town, which means that the Big 5 is practically on your doorstep. It is nestled in the world famous Brandwacht mountains, offering peaceful, beautiful scenery. They offer game drives and bush safaris, as well as African Khoisan Bushmen Rock Art which is about 6000 years old. Standard and luxury accommodation is provided. Some of the animals you can spot here are the blue wildebeest, giraffes, eland, the endangered bontebok, zebras, lynx, and oryx, to name a few.

A two and a half hour drive from Cape Town will take you to this small private game reserve located in the little Karoo. InverDoorn is over 10 000 hectares and is home to 1 200 free-roaming wild animals, including the Big 5. Daily game drives are offered where you can spot lions, rhinos, buffalos, the Cape leopard and the rest of the Big 5.

Kagga Kamma Private Game Reserve

The furthest to travel from Cape Town, a 3 hour drive will take you just south of the stunning Cederberg mountains. This lodge was once home to Bushmen so there are plenty of rock paintings and interesting artifacts to see, dating back 6 000 years. You can partake in a San Cultural tour where expert guides will bring the history of the bushmen to life.
Morning and evening game drives are offered in open 4×4 vehicles. Quad bike safaris and mountain biking are offered for the more adventurous traveller. The reserve also offers guests a swimming pool and a Health and Beauty Spa where you can be pampered by experienced therapists.
