Many travellers don’t only want to go on a safari trip, they also want to experience Africa with all its highs and lows. They want to get involved on a personal level and this is what Voluntourism is all about.
The wonderful attribute about Voluntourism is that any one, at any age can get involved. All you need is a big heart, a willing hand and a warm smile!
Here are a few ideas on what you can do to give back while enjoying yourself on a safari. Just two things to keep in mind: please make sure that what you are giving is necessary and sustainable for the community.
Here are some projects you can get involved in:
• Marine Conservation
• Construction Projects
• Volunteer with Children
• Teaching Projects
• Animal Care
• Healthcare Projects
Visit orphanages, schools, hospitals, AIDS/HIV clinics. When you are there find out what their needs are and buy from the local community instead of bringing supplies from home. Get their contact details so you can stay in touch with them when you get home, and get your friends and family involved. Often they will need stationery, sports equipment, food, clothing and medical supplies. Obviously you can only give what you can afford, but be creative, and remember the smallest act of giving can make a world of difference.
