Leaving the vibrant city of Cape Town we travel to the arid desert of Namibia and the beautiful wildlife sanctuaries of Botswana and Zimbabwe. We will canoe through the Orange River, hike up towering sand dunes, game drive through some of Africa’s most famous Parks and witness the cascades of the incredible Victoria Falls. We cover plenty of distance on isolated and rugged paths, and travellers should be prepared for this. However, staying in comfortable lodgings along the way makes this all the much easier!

Itinerary

Days 1 – 2: Cape Town, South Africa

Today we gather at 13h00 at the Greenfire Cape Town Lodge to set off on an exploration of Cape Town. We have a day and a half here, so our time will be spent participating in activities such as trekking up the iconic Table Mountain, visiting Cape Point, the V&A Waterfront, Hout Bay, the famous Stellenbosch winelands and other various attractions. Our exact itinerary will be weather-dependent. We stay at a lovely lodge situated on the beachfront for both nights. Lunches and dinner will be at your own expense.

Day 3: West Coast, South Africa

Departing from the ‘Mother City’ we take one final view of the majestic Table Mountain from across the bay, we then journey northward through the ‘Swartland’ and along the West Coast making our way into Namaqualand. In the beginning of Spring, this normally desolate area comes to life with the blossoming of countless desert-adapted flower species. We spend our night at Hondehokke.

Days 4 – 5: Orange River, Namibia

We make our way across the border and into Namibia today, then journey a brief distance to our base camp situated on the Orange Riverbank from where we start our canoe expedition. The Orange River forms an incredible sight – a green ribbon snaking its way through the desert and enormous mountains of the Richtersveld National Park. We spend two nights in comfortable accommodation and on the second day we enjoy a long canoe trip down the river. As the day winds to an end we will return to our accommodation to take in the natural beauty that surrounds us.

Day 6: Fish River Canyon, Namibia

We make our way directly to the magnificent Fish River Canyon, the second biggest of its kind in the world. Following a visit to the numerous viewpoints and exploring the rim of the Canyon, we carry on into the true Namib for a picnic lunch en route to our Greenfire Desert Lodge.

Day 7: Namib Desert, Namibia

Our lodge is located on our private Nature Reserve situated within the Namibrand Nature Reserve and is home to a variety of desert-adapted animals and plant life. The lodge is incredibly constructed against a rocky outcrop between the giant mountains and red dune-fields. During our time spent here, we will embark on guided treks and drives, including a night drive that takes place through the Reserve, granting us permission to view animals up close.

Day 8: Sossusvlei, Namibia

We have a leisurely start today, journeying straight to the Sossusvlei dune-fields. The final part of our travels to the dunes will be through heavy sand, for which we make use of an open 4X4 vehicle. Once we have made our way to the dune summits for magnificent views, we head back to our vehicle and carry on to the unusual trading post of Solitaire.

Day 9: Dunes – Swakopmund, Namibia

We have a brief distance to travel, crossing the Kuiseb Canyon and the Naukluft Park toward the seaside town of Swakopmund where we spend two evenings at the Greenfire Swakopmund Lodge. We have a full day of exploring this town that is rich in history, culture and activities.

Day 10: Swakopmund, Namibia

Our lodging provides the perfect location for some exploration of Swakopmund. Here you will come across many beaches, markets, curio stores and a massive range of adventure activities, including quad biking, sky diving, horse riding, dune boarding and many more! Make an effort to try out the nightlife in Swakopmund, as well as delicious dinners out at the local restaurants (own expense).

Day 11: Brandberg, Namibia

We travel north up the Skeleton Coast today, to the seal colony of Cape Cross before making our way back inland. We journey through the desert to pay a visit to the rock paintings of the Bushmen at Brandberg, after which we spend the evening at the base of the mountain. We try our best to spot the elusive desert elephant.

Days 12 – 13: Etosha National Park, Nambia

Today we make our way into the beautiful Etosha National Park for a magnificent wildlife game-viewing experience throughout the afternoon. We head back to our accommodation and then enjoy an evening of game viewing at a floodlit waterhole. The next day we then continue through the Reserve, game driving to the other side of the Park where we will stay in relative comfort.

Day 14: Caprivi, Namibia

Departing from the severe desert environment, we make our way north to the lush region of Caprivi. This evening will be spent on the magnificent Okavango Riverbanks at Ngepi which offers a refreshing night’s rest.

Days 15 – 16: Okavango Delta, Botswana

We embark on a brief drive to the Pan Handle, from where we will climb aboard a motor-boat and be carried through to the core of the Okavango Delta. When we are in the Delta, we journey further by means of mokoro (traditional dug-out canoes) to reach our isolated campsite. This is truly a natural wonderland and a massive range of wildlife will be seen here, in their natural habitats. We will spend two evenings here in the wilderness and exploring this incredible area by foot or on a mokoro.

Day 17: Maun, Botswana

Today we embark on a mokoro and boat transfer across the Pan-Handle that returns us to our vehicle. We then journey through the Kalahari to our lodge in Maun, where we unwind for the afternoon near the swimming pool.

Day 18: Makgadikgadi Pans, Botswana

Following a leisurely morning lazing by the swimming pool and enjoying a midday brunch we set off east to the enormous Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. The area may look stark, but there is plenty of birdlife and other animals that have made the desert their home. Without leaving a trace we travel to a remote area and enjoy the serenity of the area. We will spend the night at a fully-serviced campsite which will meet your personal needs.

This is the perfect spot for star-gazing as their is no artificial light and our guides have a thorough knowledge of the stars. If the area is inaccessible for any reason we will organise alternative accommodation.

Day 19: Kasane – Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Travelling north we head to the world famous Chobe National Park home to large amounts of elephants. We take a boat cruise in the afternoon along the river before crossing the border and heading for the highlight of our trip – Victoria Falls. We stay in the lovely Greenfire Victoria Falls Lodge while you take in the sight of the Falls and on one evening we will enjoy a true South African ‘braai’.

Day 20: Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

We are awoken in the early morning to explore Victoria Falls, the ‘Adventure Capital of Africa’. We spend an entire day here, providing us with plenty of time to view the Falls themselves and to partake in the variety of activities available here, including white water rafting, bungee jumping from an astounding height of 111 metres, aircraft flips and more. The evening meal and lunch will be at your own expense.

Day 21: Hwange – Ivory Lodge, Zimbabwe

Following some time spent at your leisure in town, we head back into the wild. We journey the brief distance to Hwange, famous as one of the finest conservation regions in Africa. Once we’ve completed a lengthy open vehicle drive, we spend our evening relaxing at our accommodation, listening to the surrounds of the bush.

Day 22: Bulawayo – Matobo – Big Cave, Zimbabwe

Today we journey southward to the broad roads of Zimbabwe’s second biggest city, Bulawayo. We carry on through the Matobo region where, at midday, we embark on a trip into the National Park to observe animals and track rhino through the thickets on foot. This evening we sleep amongst cautiously balanced boulders that this area is renowned for.

Day 23: Machete, South Africa

We carry on south today, crossing the border and making our way back into South Africa. We head to our accommodation located on a private game reserve within the valley of Limpopo.
