Tour Overview

Departing from Johannesburg

Johannesburg

Admire the Zimbabwe Ruins and the majestic Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwe and Botswana Safari Overland. Head into the Okavango Delta by means of a mokoro (traditional dug-out canoe) and observe giant herds of elephant in the Chobe National Park by boat. The tour provides all equipment such as sleeping mats (5cm thick) and chairs with backrests. Tents are large, spacious (2.2 x 2.2 x 1.8 metre with built-in insect nets) and easy to erect. It is a limited participation tour which involves putting up your tent (very easy) and packing luggage into the truck. The tour leaders prepare all meals but we ask for help in washing up (on rotation). The tour involves some long travel days on bumpy roads which means early mornings , ideal for an adventurous traveller. On your safari you will stay in designated camping sites within national parks, private reserves, private campsites and towns. Facilities are good with hot showers, electricity (for charging cameras), clothes washing facilities with generally bars and restaurants. However a few of our camps are basic and have limited facilities with simple reed enclosures for showers but do have flush toilets.

The next morning we travel to the Matopos National Park where we get informed by the guide about the Matopos Hills – granite koppies and wooded valleys. An open vehicle game drive will take us to World’s View and the historical site of where Cecil John Rhodes was buried. Being softly ‘poled’ through the labyrinth of water channel is an unforgettable experience. The Delta is formed as rainfall from the highlands of Angola flow out over the flat Kalahari Desert sands, creating a delicate lush paradise for bird and wildlife.

We camp on isolated islands in this incredibly dynamic region and partake in bush walks, bird watching and swimming in the surprisingly crystal clear water. We camp with our guides who teach us all about their traditional lifestyles and culture. We make our way back to Maun in the early evening of Day 14 and are granted time to an optional game flight over the Okavango which provides you with an entirely new perspective of the area.

This is a community-based wildlife project formed in 1992 to aid in conserving the endangered rhino and to restore a region that was previously filled to the brim with wildlife to its former glory.
