Xigera Camp, Botswana

Pronounced ‘Kee-je-ra’, Xigera Camp is situated on the aptly named Paradise Island, encircled by deep waterways and dense plant life. Located within the heart of the Okavango Delta in Botswana, this Camp offers ten raised luxury tents with en-suite facilities, an outside shower, and brilliant views of the beautiful Delta floodplains that surround the area. Meals and evening drinks are served in the lounge, bar and dining area (which overlooks a constantly-flowing channel), or even beneath a blanket of sparkling stars in a traditional African boma. For the hotter days, a refreshing plunge pool is provided for some well-deserved relaxation.

Xigera is an island in the centre of a riverine forest. This is the best area in which to spot the elusive situtanga antelope that roam the Delta, as well as Pel’s fishing-owl. Waterbirds can be seen in big numbers here, including rufous-bellied heron and the secretive white-backed night-heron. Other unique birds to be spotted are greater swamp-warbler, coppery-tailed coucal and Luapula cisticola brown firefinch, swamp boubou, Hartlaub’s babbler and western banded snake-eagle, making Xigera a bird lover’s paradise set in peaceful beauty. You might even be lucky enough to see lion, leopard, hyena and buffalo as thye wade through the waters travelling between islands whilst they seek out food.

Xigera Camp is not only full of things to see, but also to do. Activities offered at this luxury campsite are both thrilling and abundant. Game drives in open Land Rovers can each carry a maximum of seven people, allowing each guest an ‘outside’ seat. Mokoro (traditional dugout canoe) excursions are a fantastic way in which to view the game of the region, as well as to appreciate the splendor and tranquility of the Okavango. Depending on the water levels, boating is another perfect way to view water-based wildlife, with a power boat available that seats up to eight people. Short nature walks around the island are also a great way to interact with nature here.

As an establishment that cares about its region, Xigera Camp donates funds and time to communities and centres, as well as to the conservation of wildlife. The Camp supports the Bana Ba Metsi School in Shakawe, which takes in problem children and inspires them to head back to school to complete their education, upping their chances in having a successful life. Xigera Camp also donates the time of certain camp staff members, as well as funding, to the Maun Council Centre, which is a counselling centre for those suffering with AIDS.
