This Livingstone to Livingstone Accommodated adventure leads you through the beautiful lands of Namibia and Botswana highlighting the wildlife of Etosha National Park, the scenery of Damaraland and the dunes of the beautiful Namib Desert. Travelling to the Etosha National Park, being one of Southern Africa's most loved wildlife sanctuaries packed with a variety of animals and amazing scenery for your viewing pleasure and to the vast landscapes of the Namib Desert where you enjoy sunsets over the world’s highest sand dunes and end off with a boat cruise in the Chobe National Park. The accommodation on tour is a mixture of guest houses, chalets, lodges or permanent tented camps. The accommodation we use is graded 2 to 3 star and is comfortable, clean and on a twin share bases (en-suites with occasional shared bathrooms). All linen and bedding is provided. Most meals are provided by the guides around the fire or on the roadside during travel days (the truck has a fully kitted kitchen). Should you be a single traveller you will be roomed up with another same gender traveller unless you prefer a single supplement (limited to 2 travellers). Limited Participation: An essential part of your safari is participation. Your tour leaders will do all the meal preparation but we do ask travellers to help (on rotation) with the washing up. There are some long travel days which require early morning starts, to gain the most of our day in Africa.

Itinerary

Days 1-2: Livingstone

Please be available for the departure meeting at 14h00. You will then have two days free time to explore this beautiful area and see the splendour of Victoria Falls. Victoria Falls, the planet’s biggest sheet of falling water, is 1.7 kilometres wide and 100 metres high, and the mist that it creates can be seen more than 50 kilometres away. Known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya (the smoke that thunders), Victoria Falls will quite literally takes your breath away – and soaks your clothes at the same time.

Days 3-4: Caprivi, Namibia

Today we cross out of Zambia and enter into the Caprivi Strip where we will spend two days exploring this area. The Caprivi Strip is the northern Namibian gateway to the Okavango Delta, also known as the Panhandle – resembling a pan’s handle. The area is particularly lush and green providing significant habitat for the endangered African Wild Dog. We’ll explore the Kwando River by boat and take a game drive into the Mahango Game Reserve located in the north east of Namibia on the Botswana border. The varied vegetation of the 25 400 hectare Mahango Game Reserve is widely considered one of Namibia’ s most varied and fascinating conservation areas.

Day 5: Rundu, Namibia

We will spend the morning enjoying the lovely birdlife before hitting the road that takes us past the Kavango River where you will see villages of quaint grass huts and local wooden crafts and carvings. Tonight we stay at Inkwazi Lodge which is situated along the river in Rundu. We can kick back here and enjoy a spectacular sunset.

Days 6-8: Etosha National Park, Namibia

We make our way to the wildlife-dense Etosha National Park deep in the heart of Namibia. Wildlife are attracted here due to the large source of water from the pan. It is in fact known as ‘the great white place of dry water’. Look out for elephant , antelope, lions amongst a variety of other species. We will be staying on the Tarentaal Guest Farm which is on the boundary of the park. Much time will be spent on morning and afternoon game drives.

Day 9: Brandberg, Namibia

Today our journeys take us south to the Brandberg Mountain and we will pass through beautiful desert landscapes. The Brandberg mountain is a soaring mass of granite that reaches 2573 metres. We will stay in a lodge in the dry Ugab River which is home to the rare desert elephants. These desert elephants have adapted to the dry semi-desert conditions because they have a smaller body mass and longer legs allowing them the physical attributes it takes to walk longer distances to reach water. We will take a walk with a local guide around the petrified forest to see the famous White Lady rock painting.

Day 10-11: Swakopmund, Namibia

We will travel along the flat open plains to the west coast to spend time observing the Cape Cross Seal Colony bathing in the ocean and basking in the sun. Once we have spent some time enjoying the coast we will continue on to another coastal town of Swakopmund. Here you can explore the town or go sea kayaking or dune boarding at your own expense. There is still a very strong German influence that comes from the German colonialists who settled here in 1892. This influence can be seen in the food you eat and the surrounding architecture.

Day 12-13: Namib Desert, Namibia

We will be leaving the town of Swakopmund and the lunar landscapes behind as we travel into the Namib desert. Red sand dunes define this area as well as unusual crescent-shaped dunes and the most widespread linear dunes. Our next exploration will be that of Sossusvlei where we will explore Sesriem Canyon and its unusual rock formations. In and around the canyon you will find springbok, gemsbok, cape fox and hyena amongst the camel thorn trees. Back at the lodge you can watch the sun set over the world’s highest sand dunes for a wonderful end to your day.

Day 14: Windhoek, Nambia

Our destination for the day is the capital and largest city of Namibia, Windhoek. The town is an eclectic mix of African and European culture together with a mixture of the German modern and colonial era. You will have the day free to explore the city and perhaps become familiar with the rich history. Visit the museums, craft markets and shops and then in the evening you can enjoy a meal at one of the local restaurants (own expense).

Day 15: Kalahari, Botswana

*Victoria Falls to Windhoek tour ends at +/-08:00am on morning of day 15.

We will cross into Botswana and spend the night in the heart of the Kalahari amongst the dunes that are covered with a relative abundance of vegetation, including grass tussocks, shrubs, and deciduous trees that have evolved to make use of the area’s infrequent precipitation and wild swings in temperature. In summer, the heat can top 45 degrees Celsius (115 degrees Fahrenheit); on winter nights, lows can drop to -15 degrees Celsius (seven degrees Fahrenheit). You will go on a guided walk with the local bushmen to learn about their ancient bush skills and how they survive in the desert.

Day 16-18: Okavango Delta

We will spend time in the beauty of the Okavango Delta where fresh water floods in and spreads into the channels that make up the Delta. We will go on mokoro trips where you will be guided along the waterways in traditional dug-out canoes. Our accommodation will be in tented camps on a remote island where there will be plenty of game walks and opportunities to swim.

Day 19: Makgadikgadi Pans

We will head to the Makgadikgadi Pans today which is a large salt pan situated in the middle of the desert just north-east of Botswana. The pans are 3 900 square kilometres and is one of the largest salt pans in the world. Here you will find plenty of birdlife as well as animals such as zebra, wildebeest and springbok.
